3.6 downpipe

Having removed most of the exhaust system to gain access to the propshaft has given me the opportunity to inspect the exhaust system closely.
All four boxes are dated 1988 so are original and despite looking rusty are still perfectly solid. The downpipes from the manifold to the large single pipe are a twinwall construction and a lot of the outer skin has corroded away, although not leaking they really need replacing. Not available new of course and salvaged ones I have seen seen just as bad as the ones I have.

I thought I was being clever in buying one at the spares day ffom a 3.6 XJ40 which looked the same but turned out to be different. (Interestingly the XJ 40 one has a bracket where the only things supporting the XJS system are the manifold and the ones right at the end of the back boxes).

Most replacement exhausts don't include the downpipes, so I might have to look at getting one custom made.

Additionally, doing some research suggests that removing the centre boxes whilst giving a better sound and high speed power, reduces lower speed torque and increases fuel consumption so I would like to keep it fairly standard.

I'm putting the existing system back on for now but will update in the future if I find a solution.

If you can hang on a day or two, I have one up in the gods of my workshop. Certainly not new but from memory it was very good. It came with a load of XJS spares I bought years ago. I will dig it out and take photos.

Found it!
It looks very useable but if they are now made from unobtainium it might be worth having it coated in some way (ceramic, hot zinc?) to preserve it. I’ll pm you tomorrow or Monday with pics of the whole thing and some detailed close ups. If I needed one I would certainly be happy to use it.

I also have a perfectly good second hand one, with brand new rings. Bought as a spare at the time for my XJS.
