I have decided to install electric cooling for my XJS V12, and have already removed the viscouse fan and associated fittings, one thing i did find was that all the fan blades had micro cracks all through them , and so was in its last throws of life

Hi BB,

When you took off your mechanical fan, did the 'associated fittings' include the fan belt, bearing and bearing housing on the front of the V12 engine?

I am reassembling the cooling system on my V12 and also going electric fans (after the viscous coupling seized last summer, causing the inevitable explosion of fan blades - took out the radiator and fan shroud too).

It looks like the whole bearing assembly can come off along with the idler pulley. It would be nice to take some useless weight of the car and give a bit more clearance for the electric fans.

I have gone for two 12" Pacet fans pulling through the radiator plus an 8" pushing through the A/C condenser. Those, along with a nice new radiator should be enough to keep things cool this summer. 8)

Cheers,
Glenn

Glenn,

yes, the whole lot can come away, the only thing i had to overcome was that two of the mountings go through the pump studs, you will need either two short bolts, or some stud with some nuts to refit where the fixings were removed

other than that, its quite easy

as for weight, i recon i removed 20kg of unnecessary equipment

Have been toying with doing this to my car as well, as my work mate trevor has converted his.
He has used 2 fiat punto or panda fans!

If your after weight loss BB how about removing the air con pump etc?
This was another idea i had considered.
I mean how often do you need Ac in this country?
I think i could put up with window powered Ac

lol,

i use my aircon every day

one,
it gets rid of internal moisture and stops the windows from fogging up, and it can be used in the ' hot ' setting, so you get hot aircon air in the winter,
mine is actually automatic climate control

two,
it keeps all the seals and gaskets oiled and so prevents leaks

there is actual proof that the drag on the engine , and therefor the fuel use is no worse than driving round with the windows open

HI all, ive just baught a fan kit from the usa from. v12's website. they make a complete kit with wireing relay. the fans are 14's i think but are built into a alloy shroud which relpaces the old one. alloy's good as no rust and for the look its painted black. there is a wait but i dont mind. you might also want to check out the new pump temp sensor which activates at 82, earlier than the standard of 90. this will help with the twin electric fans you are all fitting as the small original fan is only to protect against meltdown. have a look.
