Out with the old.....in with the new

Postby dhdove » Sun May 14, 2006 3:23 pm

Dear all,
I have had my new 1995 XJS Celebration 4.0 Coupe (Jet Black) on the road for a couple of weeks now, luvverly!
I bought the car before Christmas, it was advertised cheap in Auto-Trader ......I should have known better........
The car was in Fleetwood, north of Blackpool (did any of you go and see it?). I fell in love as soon as I saw it , been standing for six months, no problem, dodgy tyres, no problem, highish mileage, no problem, no aircon, no problem etc.etc. You know how it is, you see a car and the head says NO but the heart says BUY IT
Brought the car back on a trailer (seemed the best way to go, but believe me a four wheel car trailer with an XJS on it is a fair old load, even for a Granada 2.9 Cosworth - the wifes car) 220 miles. Gave it to my garage in Somerset "please re-comission this so I can drive it".
All went well until "The Knock".
Absolutely beating it's brains out. "Could be the torque converter", whip that and the gearbox out and run the engine. no difference......"better whip the engine out and have a look"....we'll have to completely strip the engine.....eventually they found the remains of the tickover control valve from the inlet manifold (?) in cylinder no.6, luckilly not too much damage done. :x
Collected the car, still had a mis-fire problem. two more weeks later eventually discovered that the LT wiring feed to the coils had broken down and cracked due to heat attack, replaced this, all AOK.
Two more weeks later and I wouldn't swop it for the world. :D All electrics now work. even the cruise. Last week I tried the Sports setting on the box, switched to sports and booted it....I bottled at ninety (KPH obviously!). Wow some improvement over the 3.6!
Anyway, does anyone know of a buyer for a highly pampered v. solid and much loved '89 3.6 Coupe with only slightly dodgy bodywork :?:
Have hit the first snag that I can't sort, please look at bodywork/interior and help me out!
All the best,
DH Dove

Pop'
Can do nice condition piped magnolia interior, fraid paintwork is Diamond Blue. But have maintained it more or less regardless of expense over the last three years and have spent £7000 on it
Inc...Rear brake/handbrake overhaul, air con compressor, evaporator, metering valve, fuel tank and "swirl tank", gearbox mount, rear radius arms and bushes, radiator, HT leads and distributor cap, pirelli P4000 all round, oil cooler by-pass mod., front sub-frame mounts and suspension bushes, front shocker bushes....mostly done by Swallows Jaguar in Somerset....I could go on.
I know this must look as though I've got more money than sense  but I love my 'S, its my daily driver and I expect it to start on the button and go anywhere, anytime, without bangs rattles and knocks, properly and reliably. NB Mot Sept 2006 - last year it went straight through, no Tax.
If its bits you're after.............. :D
Regards
DH Dove.

Glad you are enjoying your celebration - mine is also a 95 and it is fantastic. Don't be fooled by its lovely condition, first chance you get climb all over it with waxoyl or dinitrol - I found in mine that rust was beginning in the sills and a few other places - easily sorted if you get after it. I have still to do the bonnet and in the boot but at least the critical areas have been protected so feeling happier.
