Windscreen hell! HELP!

Postby mark.ellington589 » Tue Apr 15, 2025 12:58 pm

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this thread however I thought I would share some information and plead for some help at the same time. My 1991 Xjs facelift windscreen was delaminated and I found the correct screen (or so I thought) to replace it. On removal it turns out the new one is too big. After extensive investigation this is what I have learned.
* the supply chain is contaminated, the correct part number for the series2 XJS coupe is being incorrectly applied to the series 3 glass.

* The size on my car is 566mm x 1465mm the series 3 is 15mm wider. All currently marked up mark 2 glass in the supply chain come with a window boss, this is an Indicator that it may be wrong, this is not a slam dunk though, you need to measure it because it could just be a specification error.

* my screen is now cracked so the car is now off the road

* the time scale for getting one made is 14-16weeks. We have found the correct sizes in the system so we can definitely confirm there are different sizes between the facelift models.

* even is you have a screen without a boss do not jump to conclusions thinking it’s a series 2 glass, the series 3 convertibles shouldn’t have a window boss so it’s most likely still wrong.

Hopefully you find this useful, I have spent over a week trying to find the correct glass and there is ZERO to be had anywhere. If you have one that you’re willing to sell please contact me, if you’re thinking of replacing yours, plan ahead! I will be ordering 2, one for the car and one for stock. We are also exploring taking a larger glass and grinding it down to fit however a lot of material is required to be removed so this isn’t very appealing.

I am confused. I know about XJ6 Series 2 and Series 3, but not XJS. There are several XJS designations - HE, and Facelift being the two most common, but XJS's are usually distinguished by VIN, 'cos it's really messy.

(I see classic.com using Series II to mean HE, but then I see automobile-catalog.com using Series 2 to mean Facelift. I think this shows they are making these designations up!)

Of course I wouldn't expect an XJ6 windscreen to fit any XJS (though given Jaguar's ability to reuse parts, anything is possible).

Hi Paul, so the HE screen goes in with rubber. From 91-93 they bonded them in and there are 2 screen sizes, one for the coupe and one for the convertible, the convertible is slightly taller. At some point in 93 they changed the sizes, both the convertible and couple are the same size but the convertible doesn’t have the window boss, the mirror is attached the the headlining frame in the convertible, the coupe has the mirror attached to the screen.
What we found is there is a width difference of 10mm between the series 2 facelift and series 3, the series 3 being larger. You can fit a series 2 to a series 3 (just apparently) but you can’t fit a series 3 into a series 2 car, you would not be able to put in the finishing rubber and then have space to put on the side SS trim. The curious thing is that I have spent a long time looking for a screen as have the windscreen suppliers and when they find one and measure it we see that it’s been incorrectly coded as a series 2. Good new for all that own late 93 to 96 horrible news for the 91-93 owners. The other part numbers are misleading as they just refer to green or clear screen and top blue sunshield or not.

Mark,

Thanks for the info, that's very interesting, particularly your observations that there are differences in windscreen height for early facelift Convertibles, and in width for Coupes & Convertibles on the late big-bumper cars. My original understanding had been that the facelift Convertible glass differed in thickness to the Coupe, but your investigations seem to add a different perspective to the situation.

In addition, the Jaguar parts system does not seem to have a consistency as regards the changepoints and part numbers for the windscreen glass compared to the windscreen frame pressing. There is a changepoint in the screen frame at VIN 188105 (mid 93) which is perhaps logical as parts of the bodyshell changed at that point for the introduction of the big-bumper models. That would be the designation of what you have seen referred to as "Series 2" & "Series 3" facelift cars. (Not a term, we have ever seen used for XJS's) But the glass part number changepoints are different with up to 6 part numbers for the facelift Coupe, and no designated change apparently at VIN 188105?

It would be useful if you could detail the part numbers (and VIN changepoints?) that you have found in order that we can do some reconciliation
to the Jaguar parts system and our own records.

Tks
