Sovereign S2 Stereo DIN size ?

Postby rotate1369 » Sun Apr 13, 2025 4:45 pm

Hello to all !
I have recently acquired a Daimler S2 Sovereign. I would like to upgrade the Stereo Head unit to a retro modern unit. My question is….Is the existing original stereo a standard single DIN size ? Or if anyone has already done this, what did you use and how successful was that adventure ? Thank you from a New Member, New Owner :D :D

Welcome to the JEC and to Jaguar Series 2 ownership. FWIW I fitted a 'Retrosound' branded unit to my Series 2 without any issues. The unit has lots of functions and the only downside is trying on the move, to remember which combination of buttons operates which function, like answering the phone or increasing the bass or treble settings! :) Mike.

AFAIR it's not a DIN size, since that standard was only introduced in 1984. It's the previous size where the radio is held by the two control knobs, and it's a slightly larger slot ( a matter of a few millimetres) than DIN-1. When I replaced my XJS radio with a DIN one, it either came with, or I bought at Halfords, an adapter. That was essentially a thin iron wrapper with some bendable bits that you could tweak to fit the hole and hold the radio.

To fit it, the first step was to remove the plate over the radio mounting, with the two hole for the control knobs and their associated nuts. Said plate was retained by 4 pop rivets, so it was a case of drilling them out and carefully removing all the shavings. That plate is now spare, as DIN radios don't use them for mounting.

The other thing was the Jaguar plug was also pre-DIN standards. Again, Halfords supplied an adapter plug/socket. In fact, I found my radio was very oddly wired, and the connections in the plug didn't agree with the wiring diagram or the adapter. I found you could extract the terminals by poking a very thin screwdriver down the back to depress the retaining tang. Then just replace them in the right locations!

If you have yet to buy the replacement, one minor point to check is how many control and power wires it supports. My best replacement radio had a connection to the sidelights power so when you switched the car lights on, you got illuminated dials, useful at night, but off during the day. You also invariably get permanent power (for station memory, PIN code etc.) and ignition-switched power so it turns off when you switch off.

You can also get remote controls for attachment to the steering column or somewhere convenient for the driver. AFAIK they are standard, but the radio suppliers don't tell you that and instead offer their own very expensive version.
