Postby leelane588 » Fri Oct 11, 2024 11:02 pm

Hi all

Parking my 2007 xk for winter , plugged into ctek and good quality car cover due to not being able to store in garage

Any specific recommendations in terms of frequency of starting / running

Just done oil and filter and filled with bp ultimate fuel

Any advice much appreciated

Thank you

One thing you haven't mentioned is tyres. They will develop flat spots if the car is not moved regularly. To minimise the issue, pump them up to a good 40psi but don't forget to reset them when you put the car back on the road. As for starting and running the engine, there are two schools of thought. One recommends running the engine periodically (say once a month) to keep it free and lubricated. The other suggests that, without a 10+ miles run to warm everything sufficiently thoroughly, it is very difficult to avoid condensation and acid formation which can do more harm than good. What is certain is that any running should be done for long periods to reduce any possible adverse effects. Mike.

Apart from pumping up the tyres as Mike says, putting the battery on a trickle charger, I don’t start the engine at all. Perceived wisdom does seem to be don’t start it unless you’re going to run it for a good while. Only other thing to do is put some dehumidifiers in the boot and car, to absorb any damp.

There is also some debate about how much fuel to leave in. Modern fuel will not degrade over 6 months, but the agreed wisdom seems to be fill the tank, to avoid moisture from the air above the fuel causing an issue. Having said that, mine is tucked away with only a half full tank, I really dont think it's that important..

I agree as long as you avoid salted roads!
