XJS Prices

Postby steveww » Fri Oct 30, 2009 1:35 pm

Looking through the ads on the usual sites I notice that there is a huge range in prices being asked for the XJS from £500 to £22,000

The £500 basket case is understandable but what I do not understand is the range from £8,000 to £22,000 for cars that appear very similar. What are the main influences on these prices?

owners perception of the cars value against what they paid for it and what they might have spent on it.......

you can price a car up at any amount.......whether it sells is another matter

if your lucky ( as a seller ) you will get near what you want if someone thinks your car is worth it,

its all subjective though , even a rust free car thats the wrong colour will demand less money.....for some reason, lol

Steve

A couple of points.

Historically convertibles have always commanded a premium, as a rule of thumb, roughly double the price of the same car as a coupe. So the highest priced cars are soft-tops.

Generally the later, facelift and especially AJ16 engined cars are more popular (some galvanised panels, less rust, smoother, more powerful, more toys) and sell more easilly so are dearer.

Low mileage cars also command a higher price, so a 40K Celebration is likely to be several thousands more than it's 150K sibling, giving a £3.0k-£8k range (ish).

When you factor in the premium charged if you buy a car from a dealer which is probably at least two and up to five thousand pounds (or more in some cases) you can see that the range of possible prices is huge - just as you have pointed out.

Whether the "agreed valuation" insurance scheme has an effect in inflating owners expectations of their cars I'm not sure, though I suspect it does.

This takes no account of "specials" eg Lister, TWR, Insignia etc. I've always fancied one of the latter (nice colours and interiors) but again they do seem to command a premium. Nor for the economic climate and more importantly the price of fuel - V12's seem good value at the moment and will probably be even better value in future - if you can afford to run them!

When all's said and done the car is worth what someone is prepared to pay for it - the question is where do you pitch your asking price?
