Brake pad wear

Is there a recommended minimum for pad thickness or wait until warning light?

Re: Brake pad wear
I think you'll find the MoT test minimum thickness limit is 1.5mm but 3mm is the usual acceptable minimum for a change of pads. Mike.

Re: Brake pad wear
It passed MOT end of August with no quibble but the Bristol Jag MD recommended change soon at 3mm two months and hardly any mileage later. ( no evidence given except their word!) . Also thought rear tyres at 3.5mm should be changed. Quoted £160 more than Kwik Fit for pair of the same tyre! Will probably leave that for a bit as well. Steve.

It also depends on a persons mileage, driving style and mechanical awareness.
Dealers/workshops often advise these things are changed as it may well be a year before they are inspected again. So many these days just drive a car without even the basic checks being performed.

dyrham663,
If you have the means to visually check the pads yourself, I would rely on your own judgement. Many of the pad wear warning systems have the wear sensor on only one pad of the four on the axle. So, you're dependent on even wear wear across all four pads on both wheels to feel comfortable that it will give you sufficient warning.
I'd tend to check all four pads periodically , especially the inner ones which can be more difficult to see without wheels removed.
Cheers

Re: Brake pad wear
Dealer quoted £550 to do work. Local Jag 'specialist' said £337. I'll take it there in the next month or so.

Re: Brake pad wear
How did you get on with this and which brand of pads did you get?
I'm ready for pads soon and was shocked to find Jaguar want £200 for front pads (just parts!). Brands such as Mintex, Pagid or Bosch come in around £65-95 (F-Pace models have a variety depending on model/engine size) and I would think 1 hour for labour so can't imagine the job being worth more than £150-200.

My pads lasted longer than I expected and I've now done 40K miles on them (Jaguar pads came out and still 1/8" remaining). I've had them replaced - TWR pads fitted for £150 all-in, just 1/2 hour labour (includes wear sensors).

Thats very good - not sure mine are going to last that long

The warning light never came on so I never actually did it. It’s due MOT again soon and I’m taking it to the local people. Will see what they say. The original quote was for disks as well I think. How did you get on with this and which brand of pads did you get?

The new MOT gave an advisory that the rear disks were ‘pitted and scored’ but didn’t mention if the pads were low. So I will just carry on!
