E-type V12 work by E-type UK !!!!!!!!!

Postby vinniexkr » Sun Nov 26, 2023 3:23 pm

Hi

1971 Jaguar E-type V12 Manual

I have sent my car over to E-type Uk for the following work:
Remove both heads and strip down
Rebuild heads with new valves and springs
New valve guides and valve stem oil seals
Not sure about the camshafts ?

They performed and compression test and leak down test which they said was fine.

Does anyone have any idea as to what a head rebuild will cost ?

Regards
Vince

Hi

I have a progress update for the E-type head work.

So far they have stripped the heads off and sent them away to be rebuilt, one of the heads has 2 x cracks, I am not sure if its repairable but the cost for both heads to be rebuilt has been quoted at £8400 plus VAT.
The strip down and clean up plus the gearbox mounts being replaced is £7400 inc VAT
They removed sludge from the engine and cleaned up the block and stripped down the heads and sent them off.
More to follow !

Vince,

Wow! That seems big money?!

What is the "...strip down and clean up plus the gearbox mounts being replaced"? That £7400 figure seems an enormous amount of money if it's just relating to the gearbox mounts which can be done with the gearbox in situ.

Cheers

Hi

The cost of £7400 inc is for putting the car into the work shop after a road test, leak down test and compression test, strip down and remove the heads, strip the heads down, clean out the water jacket, replace the gearbox mounts, they have included £585.00 for parts but not listed the parts supplied !

Hi

Unfortunately I am having a bit of an argument with the garage who have my car, they say they have spent 59 hours working
on my car !! how can it take 59 hours to do the gearbox mount and remove thew heads ??
I do not want to fall out with them but I have asked them to explain were the 59 hours working on the car was made up of, a fair question
to ask I think, they have not been able to give me an explanation and basically ignored the question.

Hi

I have sent the heads up to Rob Beer racing to be rebuilt, I have had an estimate of around £4000, we will see
how that goes, he seems like a very guy.
I have not yet had a breakdown of the hours worked on my E-type, it was not the gearbox mount they done, it was the
gear-link bushings. They said it was that that was making the gear stick move when accelerating.
Update to come soon.

having trouble finding one.

Hi

I have managed to get a pair of rebuilt heads, Rob Beer put me in touch with a very skilled engine builder call Brian Ball, he had a couple of heads that had already been rebuilt and sold them to me at a very reasonable price, they looked as good as new.
I have taken the heads over to E -type UK for installation, I will let you know how that went and go through the costs involved !
It is obvious that Rob Beer and Brian Ball are keen jaguar enthusiasts and I can't thank them enough for their help.

Hi
I have called E-type UK for an update on the E-type , apparently they have finished the work and are now waiting on some good weather
to be able to test drive the car, they had a fuel leak to sort out but no other problems to mention, here hoping the bill is not to much !!

Hi

I am still waiting for my Etype, Etype uk have now said they had to change the spark plugs as they has gunged up whilst they were tuning the car ! They have then said they couldn't take the car for a test drive as the oil pressure gauge had stopped working !? they are going to fit a new sender as they said that was the problem, this was a couple of weeks ago, I do not know what is going on but I smell a rat.

Hi

I have picked up the E-type from E-type UK, their labour charges have come to over £12000.00 !! this was to
remover the heads, replace the gear lever bushes and a few minor bits, and reinstall the heads and get the car running again, they say the hours worked on the car was 100, my mind boggles !!
On my first trip down to Easbourne motor show I noticed a petrol smell, after looking I could see a very bad petrol leak, this is on the carb
they said they rebuilt because of a leak !!!! they also replaced a petrol pipe going back to the petrol tank because that was leaking, they also had to replace the oil pressure sender, these bits they said took 9 hours to do ?!!
For a so called expert company who specialise in E-types they have taken twice as long as anyone else to do the work, the price they quoted to rebuild the heads was £84000 ! over twice as much as anyone else !!! I got the heads elsewhere at a great price thanks to Rob beer racing putting me in touch with Brian Ball, thanks Rob and Brian.
I have now got to get E-type uk to sort out the petrol leak, also since they removed the center consul the radio does not work and the consul has not been fixed back correctly.
Bloody hell it is so annoying !! (that's putting it politely)

Vince,

Very sad situation. It's always disappointing when an owner and enthusiast is unhappy with the work and costs that a well-known supplier delivers.

Do let us know how it all resolves.

Good luck

Hi

I have now fallen out with E-type UK, I have had a look at the fuel leak myself and whilst doing so found something that has made my blood boil
I will not be sending my car back to them and the reason why will soon be known, I have an expert looking at the car and will report back very soon !

Hi

I have had a meeting with a jaguar expert technician, we have worked out that E-Type UK have over charged me around
60 hours labour for the job they have done, I have also been charged for work that they did not do but charged me for
which I have proof of, it looks like we having to take them to court, I will be posting some pictures of what we have found.

The car came back with the same oil in it after the heads were removed and replaced, the coolant was low as was the oil, they
had put the old air filters back in after doing carb work and a tune up which were unbelievably dirty !! the carb was leaking petrol from
pipes that should have been replaced and had new clips !! I was charged for a carb rebuild which was not done !! The carbs were running very rich and completely out of balance, the radio was wired in wrong which caused a short and had the right hand
speaker not connected, the centre consul was not installed properly ! I will be posting some pictures of this so you can see for yourself, I am
disgusted with the service they supplied and the work they have done.

Hi

I know have a repair and operation time manual, this gives the times that different work takes on the car, it is for a
xj12 and double six but the times would be about the same, in fact once the bonnet of the e-type is removed it would
make working on the engine even easier/quicker !
The time for the work E-type uk should have taken too do the work is around 28 hours, if the heads were stuck on you can add
another 2 hours, the work they had to do was, 1. Strip down the engine to be able to get the heads off, 2. Remove the heads for a rebuild and then reassemble. (I supplied two rebuilt heads) 3. Partially strip down the interior to get to the bushings on the gear lever and replace, reassemble the parts removed,
4. Tune carbs (they charged for a carb rebuild which was not done) replace the oil pressure sender and a couple of petrol pipes.
They have charged me for 100 hours of work on the car !!!???
The car was running very rich and the carbs were leaking fuel, the old air filters were left in so how could you tune them ?
They put back in a cooling hose that was ready to burst ?
I have been massively overcharged for the shoddy work they carried out, have a look at the pictures they speak volumes !
