leaking power steering unit

Postby colbol58517 » Mon Feb 12, 2024 7:16 pm

I have a 1972 series 3 Etype, the power steering unit is leaking oil and I am informed they are not repairable and have to be replaced.
Given that the me mechanics of the unit is sound, its a bit extreme to need to replace the whole unit due to a faulty seal/gasket. Are there options?
If I have to replace the unit is there a modern version that is recommended?

Hello Colbol,

can you identify the source of the leak, presumably it is visible or are you just losing fluid from the rervoir?
If it is visible it must be somewhere in the hoses\pipes and possibly a simple job to fix? If it is not visible feel the rack end boots to see if they are full of fluid? In that case, going on what you have been told it's a replacement? That seems a poor situation to me but I have little experience with modern steering systems.
