Boot Badges for V12 Cabriolets

What does the HE stand for and why don't 3.6 ers have them?
Is it something to do with the engine?

Boot Badges for V12 Cabriolets

Postby Linxman » Mon Oct 05, 2009 1:02 pm

Hi
As we're talking extreme technical detail here, I should add that to start with the HE badge went on the left of the boot and the XJS on the right.
You can see this in some of the archive photos of the early cars. At some point the badges were switched over, probably before Cabriolets went into production, but I can't be sure of that.

Why is it cabriolets never look as good as coupes? although these modern hard top convertibles are good.

The Question was Cabriolet related not XJ-S

But the answer is XJ-S related! It would be interesting to find out why they swapped sides, did the marketing boys make a convincing argument that no-one would buy the car if they left them as they were? I have a theory based on the fact that it used to be (maybe still is) common practice in magazine photos to flip the image to make it look better on the page, which results in the car appearing to be LHD. Now if this was done with the photos of the early cars ..... mind you these could have been LHD to start with, so the photos appearing to show RHD cars with the badges transposed could be LHD ones with the badges in the right place.

By the way, my wife's car has both badges in the middle and the number plate below the bumper. And its a Cabriolet. Just not a Jaguar. It will be featured in next months Jaguar Enthusiast.

Now what did I do with my Horlicks?

Thanks Chris, I didn't think I was off topic either. I was only trying to be helpful, next time I won't bother with a put down like that. And like I said, I can't be sure that the change occured before 12 cylinder Cabriolet production started, as I am not an expert on Cabs.

By the way, it definitely wasn't a case of reversing the pictures, otherwise the lettering would have been reversed too. I imagine the thinking behind the whole placement of badges was that they originally wanted to keep the XJS badge in the same place i.e. the RHS, when the HE car was introduced, but later accepted that it reads better when swapped over.

Boot Badges for V12 XJSs

Postby poprivet » Tue Oct 06, 2009 2:28 pm

Like many members I imagine, I'm starting to worry about adding my thoughts to threads in case I upset somebody, but here goes anyway

I kind of understand where Blesie's coming from, as concors is his preferred subject, so a cabriolet with a badge that is different now to when it left the factory is, err 'wrong'! (As would be a coupe or convertible I presume).

However, for many of us, we happily modify our cars as we see fit. Personally, if I had a V12 with a HE badge, I would happily prise it off, fling it over the nearest hedge and fit a V12 badge. Why?... Well to be honest, if it was my car, I can do whatever I want, so there.

Discussion and involvement are crucial to the success or demise of this forum in my opinion. Hopefully we can all act like gentlemen and ladies (where have they all gone to?) and just enjoy and further our understanding of these cars whatever their shape, age, size or colour.

You know those hard top convertibles like the new mercs, or the renault megane sports or the astra sports.
A hard top convertible that folds into the boot but looks like a loverly coupe.
Much better than those cloth tops, that give you loads of road noise and flap about.

Thats what a hard top is you know.

And honestly using a defunct and dead language like Latin, the mind boggles.

Thats a Dh dove expression you know, although i believe you are correct in that it should be spelled (luvverly) like Tony does.

At least with a cabrio, you don't have the problem of a sagging headlining i suppose.
Speaking from experience as a coupe driver, currently riding around with no headlining. 8)
