Generally speaking you should not use tyres older than 3 years.

And your source for that amazing statement is what, Steve?

Certainly not the car or tyre manufacturers who are still arguing about a six year limit:
http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=4822250

Nor RoSPA, who quote figures of six years in store or ten on the road:

http://www.rospa.com/roadsafety/advice/ ... /tyres.htm

The date of manufacture is stamped on the side wall.

No it isn't. There's a code, from which the date can be deduced, but it's not obvious and contains some ambiguities.

Wheel Wobble!

Postby MichaelSB » Sun Oct 04, 2009 10:00 am

I have been following this thread with interest as I have a minor vibration from the rear of my car at 70 + through the body.

I recently had David Marks fit 6 new shockers / new front springs / wishbone bushes / and the car now has 4 new P6000 tyres, David told me his tyre fitter thought 2 of my wheels had a slight buckle however I have had them rebalanced and apart from requiring a fair few weights the fitter balanced them ok.

So what do I look at now?

LOL!!!

Michael - if you are encountering minor vibration then I suspect it probably is the wheel(s) being slightly out of tru/very minor buckle. Weights can only do so much. If I take the cat up to 130mph - 140mph, then I still notice minor vibration which I attribute to the wheels being slightly out of tru. This doesn't really bother me, as it is only abroad on das autobahn that I let the cat streach her legs (usually between Munich and Stuttgart) :D

Wheel Wobble!

Postby FELIX456 » Sun Oct 04, 2009 8:51 pm

Hi
I had wheel wobble and got front wheels balanced- to no avail, so I had the rear ones done too.... CURED.
Always try the cheapest option first, I say!
Oh, and apparently it takes only 30 miles of driving to round off a wheel that has flatted after being sat on for a couple of months. They reckon...
If you do go for non Pirelli, try and make sure the odd-bods you buy have a 'J' code for Jaguar. There's a really good website I found which explained all the guff on a tyre, and each 'fast' car manufacturor has a code to tie a tyre to their cars.
Also, double check your insurance policy, last year my old insurer sneaked in a caveat that if my car didn't have on manufacturer recommended tyres, my insurance was invalid! In VERY small print. Sneaky. They're not my insurer any more.

Wheel Wobble!

Postby masterb » Sun Oct 04, 2009 9:30 pm

After attending to the Baby, decorating, cooking and gardening to name but a few tasks.
I actually got a chance to play with the car 4 a bit.
So I slapped on another set of alloys on the front, which had preety new looking rubber courtesy of mr goodyear 6-7mm worth.

Went 2 the garage check the pressures and then hit the motor way, and hey prestro!!! :!: :!:

Exactly the same!

I am going to stick the other alloys from that set on the back tom if i get a chance but i am not holding out much hope of a result.

Glad some one put the deciphering info 4 the tyres, as i was about to put a post on tonight saying"theres no bloody date info on my tyres!"
Will also try getting the rear tyres balanced on the original set, i really cant see it being balancing or tyre related, espescially the back as the wobble is pretty severe over 75 -80 ish.
I would love an easy solution though.
Cheers to all who have posted.

I've got some radius arms on the car, for sure!

What do you mean my checking them, or more precisely, what am i checking for?

They look solid, so are you suggest the bushes perhaps?

yes, movement in the bushes

the large end can tear away from the cup support to the cars body,

the radius arm keeps the geometry of the rear cage/axles in relation to the car , without the arms the rear axles will want to twist fore and aft ,

wear and or corrosion with the radius arms can affect the safety and handling of the car

use a pry bar to look for excessive movement of the bushes , most peeps think they look fine until they are physically checked properly...

hope this helps

BB - that's a very good point re: Radius arms. Mine were rotted through, so I replaced both of them at the same time as I was having my Koni shocks fitted. My new radius arm's weren't power-coated to protect from rust, so I have them regularly waxoyled. They are very exposed, so they will rot fast unless protected.
