Failure of the valves or the switch can result in fuel being drawn from one tank and returned to the other. That's not disastrous unless the second tank is already full,
...or the LH tank has a leak - caused by a disintegrated fuel pump seal - which is why I was using the RH tank in the first place...

So, thanks for explaining Mike, and to Poprivet for directing me to that YouTube clip from Harry's Garage. It's particularly annoying since I'm always careful to avoid E10 petrol, yet suspect increased bioethanol to be cause of this recent pump seal failure. The car's parked up for now until the weather gets warmer and then I'll make a proper investigation.
John,

I use Esso Synergy Supreme E5 in my cars, which apparently is the only E5 petrol that has zero ethanol.

Hi, I have the same problem with in tank pumps and non return valves. A while back my local garage replaced them with modern valves which have failed again. Can anyone recommend the best replacements to use? Thanks

I had the same problem with intank pumps and non return valves. Local garage replaced non return valves with modern equivalents which have failed again after a couple of years. Can anyone recommend reliable modern equivalents please?

it would be great if someone has managed to find modern fuel-resistant replacements but I suspect that will be difficult, if only because modern cars use completely different pumping arrangements (no return lines etc). Similarly, our older cars spend a lot of time parked up rather than being used regularly, which only makes the problem worse. Mike.
