ANY TIPS FOR HOW TO REMOVE HEATER FAN UNITS 1996 XJS FHC PLEASE?

Postby Mercury RV » Sat Feb 25, 2023 12:58 am

Hi everyone, Would love some input from anyone who has had this issue PLEASE?

I am attempting to remove both heater fan units on a 1996 XJS 4.0 FHC, they have the normal I understand issue of they only work on max speed, as I understand this is the control section on the top of the fan case (why put them there Jaguar?) The fan units I have are the Valeo units if it does make a difference. I have what I believe are all the fixings out, and have managed to move them down (nearside) but only around 2", they now seem VERY reluctant to go any further, please tell me, am I missing something?

I suspect they have been out before as one end of the vent pipes has duct tape on it, just it would be nice to do the job properly and replace the control circuit so I have all the speeds.

Kindest regards, Simon (Kent)

Simon,

Are you doing about the diamond-shaped Darlington transistors? These are the usual cause of the fan speed problem (I have one more to do on my car). Apparently Maplins or similar can provide suitable transistors (I'll dig out the part number. I don't think you have to remove the heater fan units to just get to the transistors. I'll look up my old photos and see,

Cheers

Yes that's the buggers. From what I understood these are located on the top edge of the fan units (so sort of just under the scuttle panel) hence needing to remove the fan units to get to them. As I said, why they could not have placed the control section in an easy point is beyond me, lets face it they seem to have been failing since the early days of the XJS. Mind you I do not expect that Jaguar had many fail during the warranty period. Kindest regards, Simon (Kent)

Simon,

I'm not sure if there's any difference on the very late XJS like ours, but see attached link which may be of help:

Thank you, I THINK I have seen this link, I think that is where I go the notion that I need to remove the fan unit AS THEY PUT IT ON THE TOP!!!

I wrote that!

The trick to removing the units, once all fixings are out is to manually open the flap underneath. this will close the other flap to stop it getting jammed. The job is easier with the seat removed.

The control unit is positioned where it is so that cooling air passes over the transister and resistors. The whole fan is built as a complete assembly for ease when the car is built.

I overhauled the units in my car 23 years ago, they are still working as intended.

I'm guessing the passenger one (RHD) one is a little more difficult in the later facelift as the air bag gets in the way.? My Driver side is not working so resigned to it's removal at some point. No doubt the resistor pack but will check the relay first :(
