2011 XKR errors on battery change
Moderators:MarkX, mike020150
I've just bought an X150 XKR convertible and it has a full Xmas tree of error messages. It was fine until the supplier found the battery flat and replaced the old battery. It now gives ABS error, traction eror and pedestrian protection system error. Using a cheap OBDN scanner no fault codes are registered. I've tried a hard re-set but errors are still the same. Does it need a more sophisticated code reader? Does it need the battery coding to the car? Advice please?
Re: 2011 XKR errors on battery change
Might be a "dumb" question, but was the replacement battery a new one of the correct specification? Also, was the replacement battery fully charged at the time of seeing the "Christmas Tree"?
These cars are extremely susceptible to a "weak" battery, which is why the general rule is to replace them at 5 years old. On my own car, I use a Ring Automotive battery charger / conditioner (Smart Charger) and it provides multiple test functions, but one of the most useful features is the LCD screen that shows the percentage charge condition of the battery.
At 1 and 2 year old, the charge quickly ramps to 100%. By the end of year 3 (whilst hooked up over winter hibernation) the battery generally only gets to 90% and thereafter you can see the gentle decline in its ability to hold, or get to, a full 100% charge.
Even if the battery in the car is sufficient to crank and start the engine, it may well have a voltage that the car's electronics don't like. Installing the correct battery should not have resulted in a Christmas Tree effect, so I would assume that the battery installed is either incorrect or has only a limited charge capacity. The Modern XK battery should be a standard Lead Acid and NOT a new style AGM battery. I use a Yuasa YBX 3000 12V 95Ah 850A.

Re: 2011 XKR errors on battery change
The XK/XKR, like many modern cars, has its charging rate controlled by a computerised module (the BMS module). When a battery is changed, the BMS has to be reset (i.e. told there's a new battery) or the charging rate will be incorrect. It's unlikely this will cause all the illuminated dash lamps you mention but it does need to be done to avoid over-charging a new battery and would be a useful first step to remove it from the list of possible causes. Some more sophisticated DIY code readers (eg Foxwell NT680 pro & others)claim to be able to reset the BMS for various models so you are not necessarily tied to paying a main dealer for this work. Mike.

Hi Mike, is that true of all the models? My 4 year old XF I think will need a new battery soon, was hoping to do it myself...

'fraid so. The current XF also requires a reset. Here's the line from Logix, "If a new battery is installed, the battery monitoring system (BMS) must be reset using Jaguar approved diagnostic equipment." Mike.

Thanks Mike, maybe time I bought a new code reader...

Regarding the original post, surely if it is a new acquisition shouldn't the supplier sort this out for you?

Re: 2011 XKR errors on battery change
Since you say that the car was OK prior to a battery change, it seems unlikely that it's suddenly fallen apart with a series of different faults. You need the services of a brilliant diagnostics expert (like David Marks) with the correct equipment to get to the bottom of the problem(s) before deciding to give up on the car. The C1A77 DTC could be something as simple as a poor earth. The TSB you quote says that, if necessary, the existing module can be reprogrammed to turn off the lamp if it has only been caused by multiple triggers without activations (electrical malfunctions) filling the module memory. Typically, main dealers aren't the best at this type of detailed diagnostic work. Try finding a good specialist from recommendations in your local region. Mike.

You don't provide any indication of where you are located. If people knew where you are - there is a facility to include "Location" in your visible profile - then others may be able to advise a suitable independent to look at your issues.

A voltmeter, that fits into the auxiliary socket inside the car, might help to see if the battery voltage is dropping at any time during the operation of the vehicle. Just a thought it helped me sort out a starting battery issue with my daughter's Ford.
Re: 2011 XKR errors on battery change
I'm in Kent near Ashford, the car came from Leicestershire. I've not been impressed with Collier St Motors my nearest specialist. In the South , I know TL in Wokingham are ace but its a long trip.
Re: 2011 XKR errors on battery change
I am in Rochester and have been using the main dealer in Canterbury (Barretts) for my XE, but have not found them good for the I-Pace. I think that their branch there in Ashford is better but I don't have 1st hand experience of them.
I have just switched to the recently operned 'Sytner' dealership in Maidstone and have been impressed.
I realise that these are main dealers with the associated costs but sometimes I have found them, cost effective, for rectifying a specific fault.
I too have been looking for an 'Independent' Jaguar specalist in the area arounf Kent but have not had much luck. Maybe the guys at the local branch in Kent know more. I will see what I can find and let you know.
Kind regards
