1966 3.8S Bonnet catch

Postby brent » Tue Mar 01, 2022 10:48 pm

Hi all,

The bonnet release cable came free of where it attaches at the front, and in the process of reattaching it I unnecessarily removed the striker plate.

I've obviously aligned it incorrectly as the bonnet which opened OK at first.. now doesn't.. How do you align it, and how on earth am I going to get it open?

Hope someone out there has the knowledge :)

Cheers

Hello Brent,

Iv'e never had to do that but the best way I think is to remove the radiator grille, which will give access to the latch from underneath.
It will be a bit of suck it and see once you have access? If the worst comes to the worst it may be that you can uscrew the striker pin completely. It will be tight though as it is locked in place with a locknut?

Hi Alec,

Indeed having the radiator grill off makes it possible to access, and I have taken that off to get to it, I have just messed up the alignment and it just wont pop out.

Good idea about the striker pin, I'll try that.

I have managed to find another catch assembly which is on its way, just cant figure out how to adjust it

Thanks for the tip on the pin! Much appreciated

Brent

Hello Brent,

the bolt hole sizefor the catch give some leeway to movement so the striker pin goes in central (assuming the bonnet is correctly aligned first), also the length of the striker pin is adjustable, if it is just slightly short it makes it difficult to release the catch due to friction, too long and the bonnet won't sit down properly.
