I’ve just changed the engine oil in my 3.4l S-type engine and refilled it with the quantity of oil prescribed in the service manual (6.75 litres). With that quantity the oil level doesn’t even register on the dipstick. Can any s-type owners out there please tell me how much oil they have used in their cars to get the appropriate level?

Perhaps you have the wrong dipstick fitted. Just a thought.

Re: S-type engine oil capacity
Hi Jimbo,
Thank you for taking the time to reply.
I do indeed have the wrong dipstick but, having failed (so far) to track down the right one I’ve been making due allowance. David Reilly of the International S-type register was kind enough to supply the dimensions of the correct dipstick so I have used those to make up a temporary “measuring stick” for the purpose of determining the correct level.
Kind regards

To answer your question directly………. 12 Imperial pints or 6.75 Litres, including the filter.
In addition, I have checked the 12 imperial pint capacity against the dip stick calibration marks with the sump removed on my 3.4ltr S Type. The dip stick full mark agrees with a 12 pt refill, including filter.
Many years ago, as a fleet engineer, we ran a MkX 3.8 ltr between Derby and Milan at the rate of 80,000 miles per year just for a short time. In oil consumption terms and plug fouling I can tell you that there is advantage in only checking the oil level in an engine HOT condition and only refilling to the level between high and low on the stick.
You would be surprised at how many owners are running around with the car front end high, shot engine mountings and the gearbox rear mounting incorrectly set up, and wonder why the engine uses oil !!!!
Regards
Norman
