I'd be grateful to anyone with a view on the root cause of my latest mechanical gremlin...
I have a 1994 4.OL which is turning over but won't fire.
Inspection under the bonnet reveals no spark to the plugs, and no positive feed to what I call the distributer but which I know isn't called that.
My initial feeling is that it could be the ECU, although that was reconditioned earlier this year because it was full of water. That or the immobiliser.
I have never had a keyfob for this car, and therefore have no way of knowing whether the alarm/immob is working or not. I have never had the alarm sound, and it has always started first time of asking.
There is an LED on the cigarette lighter which I presume to be factory fitted - can anyone tell me what this is for and what it should be doing under normal behaviour?
Now for the interesting bit. I had the battery out to re-charge having turned the engine over so much without it firing. When it went back in two days later the car started first time. The next day, with the battery having been left in the car overnight, I had the same non-starting problem.
Anyone with any suggestions of what it could be? I'd also like to know more about Jag immobilisers, where they are located and what can be done to cut them out of the system.
Thanks for your help.

The immobiliser cuts the fuel, not the spark so I don't think that could be the problem. This is so the catalitic converters don't get unburnt fuel in them and catch fire!
Does you car have the trip computer display? Does it show any fault codes?
For no spark the most likely culprit has to be the crank position sensor, but for some reason this doesn't have a code. They do tend be randomly erratic before giving up all together. It could of course be wiring related near the ecu or possibly the ecu again if the water damage/cause of the leak was not fully repaired.
I am no expert on immobilisers and tend to leave well alone as it could all go horribly wrong with one snip:twisted:
