4.0 XJS Auto Transmission Filter

Postby ptjs1 » Mon Jun 30, 2014 3:51 pm

Thanks to davidr for highlighting this problem.

I have been chatting further with our contact Glen at Jaguar Classic Parts and they now think there is an error in the Jaguar Parts System which is also used by the independents and their numbering systems.

They haven't clarified the situation completely for x300s yet but what we do know is:

ZF4HP22 boxes were fitted in 3.6 XJS
ZF4HP24 boxes were fitted in 4.0 XJS

The filter part number for a 3.6 XJS is JLM664. This is correctly shown on the JCP parts system.

The original part number for the filter in a 4.0 XJS was also JLM664. We've clarified this with JCP and confirmed it by me checking the original paper parts catalogues for XJSs. However, the JCP online system (and therefore the system used by Dealers and Independents like Manners etc) is currently showing that the filter is JLM2128. It is now believed that this is wrong, although JCP are not sure how it happened. David bought JLM2128 and it has a longer pickup pipe which won't fit in the sump.

The advice from JCP at the moment is that if you have a 4.0 XJS you should buy JLM664, NOT JLM2128. They will continue to investigate and change the system when they have confirmed that there is an error.

I'll also mention that if you buy the O-Ring from a Jaguar Dealer, they have to sell you a packet of 5! However, if you order online from Jaguar Classic Parts, you can buy just the 1 that you need!

Hope that helps.

I have now received and fitted the JLM664 and I can confirm that it does fit my 4ltr Celebration. Look at the thread in the X300 forum for photos etc.
So it would appear that JLM2128 is the wrong part for that application and hopefully JCP will update their website etc.
Many thanks to Paul for invaluable help

David

PS it was interesting that the fluid I drained out the second time wasn't perfect. Obviously it had picked up quite a bit of gunk from the fluid left in the torque converter and pipework. Makes you think that flushing it through is worthwhile!

And also that the 'filter' doesn't remove anything then large lumps.

Glad you sorted the problem and I'm sure that the flushes will do good. I know yours is a later one, but that fine black sediment plays havoc with the earlier non-electronic box by affecting the governor causing it to hang in 1st gear.

Just to mention that JCP sent me a pack of 5 O rings even though I only ordered 1. The pack has a sticker on it saying "unit of issue" so this is obviously their policy too.

This is still a problem in 2021
The top item in the photo is JLM664 from my 1991 4.0 XJS and below is the part supplied by an independent.

mwsmith29,

As a suggestion, if you can't source the correct filter, you could do a lot worse than just thoroughly clean your existing filter. It's effectively just a wire mesh inside that casing. IMO, you could clean it and reuse it. I've saved my last one for that purpose.

I subsequently received a replacement filter JLM664 from the supplier.
Its fitted now and the box is topped up with 5ltrs of Dexron 3 fluid. This is compatible with Dexron 2.
I didn't expect to notice any change but the gear changes do seem a little sharper than previously !

Glad it worked out well! Autoboxes love clean fluid.

I'm about to do mine yet again as I have a slight leak from the filler tube attachment. A good excuse to change the fluid!

Cheers

I have the ZF4HP24 and can confirm, by bitter experience, that I too received the wrong filter. With the sump off and needing to complete the job I (afraid to admit) cleaned the original filter and put it back. I have the incorrect unit on my shelf if anyone wants it? Will correct the error next time but hand on heart the fluid does remain a nice shade of pinky/red.

As mentioned earlier, I do believe that with an absolute through cleaning, there's no real harm in reusing the original filter if you can't get the correct one.

It's sad that 7 years after I advised them, Jaguar still haven't updated their system, because most independents are working off that system and therefore also supplying the wrong part.

Hi all,

I just got caught with the same issue (should have checked the forum first). The confusing thing is the parts suppliers show the top side of the filter (the side that plugs into the gearbox) which is identical for both parts. It is the underside that is different as shown in the photos above.

I took mine off, checked the supplier website for the right part number, checked the photo and ordered. Anyway, JLM664 is definitely the right part number for my 1994 4L which is now fitted after returning part number JLM2128 which is incorrect.

Regards
Mike
