Head liner...

Yet another question regarding my 'new' XJ-S. I was told when I bought it that a new roof liner had been fitted, but it already had a bubble... after a few days of warmth, the whole thing had drooped. I was dreading taking it out but it turned out to be the simplest job on a car - ever! So, the roof liner is out of the car, the backboard is indeed fibreglass, but there is some kind of foam on it which is just flaking away and some is still stuck to the roof lining itself. When it is off you can see what a meagre job they did on glueing it - supposed to be 80% area glued and I think it's possibly 20 - 30% at best.

Questions, do I 'need' the foam? Will it look okay without or do I need to source some new, decent stuff? Is there any way I can get the residue off the lining material itself?

I did it without foam, used good high temp glue and scrubbed and cleaned the fibreglass board until I couldn't clean it any more. I glued it in sections and uses clothes pegs to hold it all secure and, all in all, not to bad! The holes for the visors and mirrors are a fraction off but not enough to show/bother me and it looks good - certainly a LOT better than before! I must admit that getting it back in was a lot harder than taking it out and getting it under the rear screen rubber was a chore but not bad.

Ask for Pedro - he is really helpful; the liner was delivered in strong packaging and is made from GRP; easy to fit and looks and feels fantastic.
I fitted this nearly 4 years ago and is still perfect - fit and forget!

Sorry that I have not extensively looked on the forum. I don't know if I can replace my headliner and need help understanding that and maybe a supplier.

I have a 1990 Jaguar XJS V12 Convertible. VIN = SAJNW4849LC168520. Can the headliner be changed without changing the convertible top? My top is in great condition but the headliner is stained badly. Any thoughts and help is appreciated.

It's quite feasible to renew the interior headlining on a convertible. A bit fiddly in places as some parts of the lining are stitched to the outer, but definitely achievable. I know you've said that your outer is in good condition but do consider any repairs whilst you've got the liner out. For example control cables, webbing straps that break from their rivets etc etc.

There's more places selling the headlining on your side of the pond. In fact, many UK suppliers source from US providers. Expect to pay about $150 for the piece. A quick google and you'll find quite a few options.

I have a 1989 Jaguar XJS Sport. I bought a new Headlining Kit from a company called Jag Headlinings . It cost me £294. It was easy to install from the passenger side with the seat fully forward. It took me a couple of hours. Looks Great. Carriage cost £42 but well worth it.

Recently, now owning an XJS, I had the headliner repaired by a professional who made a hash of the job. Previously, I had owned a 308 sports XJ and again used a company, Jaguarheadlings, Ramsgate, Kent to supply a replacement roof lining which on arrival was not good, a few creases by the sun shade recesses. A few heated calls to the company led me to install the liner anyway (via windscreen removal) as the defect would be hidden by the sun visors, bad move. Once install, an uneven surface was apparent in the centre of the liner and 2 months later it started to sag across the rear window. Present day and with my XJS, I think I'll give Pedro a shot, recommended by Member posted above, will keep you updated. Lesson learned, word of mouth is a good way to avoid disappointments. Headliner World I have used three times now. Pedro sorted my XJ-S and XJ40. I understand that he has retired now and the main contact is Dejan. Again - very helpful when I needed to replace my X356 headlining.

Collected new headliner from Dejan at Dargate, Kent, Headlining World, very good quality and good value for money, fitted very easily and looks a treat. I have spent £775 in the past with other so called headlining specialist with very poor results, seems i've been 3rd time lucky. This liner was simple to install sliding through the passenger door.
