Cooling system failure

Just thought I would share my experience with fellow f type owners so they are aware of the issues.

I had a plastic coolant pipe break in the week. I have a 2015, 3l, v6, 340bhp f type with 65000 miles on the clock.
It was part number T2R5910, a £20 part, cheap for a Jaguar part.

It caused a huge and very worrying plume of steam (looking very much like smoke) out of the back. No over heating, but I did stop pretty quickly.

Jaguar \assistance sent an AA man who patched up the brittle pipe, that broke again whilst he was fixing it and I limped home, I hope I have not done any more damage to the engine.

Anyway, replacing the pipe was simple, once I had found the part number and a garage that stocked it, and a test drive went ok until I got the low coolant message again. No plume of steam this time, just a little, but it was a wet road and difficult to tell the difference between a little steam and spray.

So this time, Jaguar assistance had the car taken to the main dealer for a proper fix under the warranty.

I don't know the extent of the issue yet, but a word of warning to everyone, the plastic pipes on the cooling system of v6, 3l engines become very brittle and break. I would check them regularly. Or even have them replaced at regular intervals. The one I had to replace was cheap and simple to change.

I imagine that there must be others on the engine as there is still an issue with mine, so if anyone can advise on these, I am sure everyone would be grateful.

Fingers crossed that I have not done any lasting damage.

Cars might be generally more reliable these days but the increased use of plastics with the inevitable risk of becoming brittle with age and heat underlines the value of regular under-bonnet checks. Such checks may only be required once a year according to manufacturers' service schedules but there're still plenty of opportunities for things to go wrong in between. After all, preventative maintenance is better than a breakdown! Mike.

Hi Mike,
Yes, regular checks are a good idea. I must have become lazy after owning a Honda for 16 years and not having to check things like coolant hoses.
However, I have now got the diagnosis and the water pump and a hose underneath the supercharger need replacing - things that a visual check would not pick up as they are tucked away.
I am not impressed with how these items have failed. If they are known to degrade and fail, surely they should be checked at services (the car's last one was just 8 months ago), or even replaced as a matter of course during a service.

Send a message to Mike Kennedy (350 Forum) he knows a company that do bespoke pipes, might be just up your street, I've had no end of trouble with coolant pipes on my 2005, 2.7d S-Type.

For info. The design of the plastic coolant pipes was changed (in 2018 I think). Originally the pipes had a seam and this has contributed to a lot of the Y pipe failures under the supercharger, when the pipes become brittle. The newer versions have no horizontal seam.

Aluminium replacements for the pipes have been produced by Euro Amp in texas, which a number of US owners and some UK owners have fitted. These still rely on 'O' rings though, so there are different views on whether these or the newer OEM is preferable.

Depends on your location but a Independent Jaguar specialist might be worth a try if you are currently using Jaguar main dealers. I use Swlalows in the South West and they tend to be much more observant about things than the dealers. They also offer a discount to JEC members which might be useful if you are having a lot of work done. The discount I got on a recent piece of work more than covered my membership of the JEC this year

Hi all, first post for me
My wife become a proud owner of her F-Type V6 in March this year. Unfortunately the car had the same brittle plastic pipe that cracked.
it’s not a simple fix
The supercharger needs to come off

We was lucky that the car was still under warranty, (wasn’t a great one but still saved us some money)
