oil pressure gauge

Postby jonc3725 » Sat Mar 21, 2009 10:15 pm

Putting all the interior bits in know :D and I started with the instrument cluster. I have now got all warning lights and dials working but the oil pressure gauge needle moves 3/4 of the way up the gauge when the ignition is turned on but before the engine is started  . When the engine is running the oil pressure then goes off the gauge. The sender is brand new from DM and I have the correct wire connected. Anybody else come across this or have any idea's before I strip down the instrument cluster

surely she will be on the road this summer!!!

oil pressure gauge

Postby Aristocat2009 » Mon Mar 23, 2009 11:35 am

I have a similar problem in that when I start my XJS the oil pressure guage goes to 3/4 and stayes there without moving up or down. I have renewed the sensor and noticed that the previous owner had rewired to the guage with a new wire. I have yet to investigate and check to see if the new wiring is correct and also test the guage.

Any advise from anyone who has experienced this problem would be greatly appreciated

regards

oil pressure gauge

jonc3725,

Are you sure that you've fitted the right genuine Jaguar transducer part number? I believe that the one you need is C46272 which costs about £50. Is this the one you've purchased? The problem might be that the transducers for later 4 litre engines probably have the same thread fitting. However, because they use a completely different type of gauge on 4 litres, the gauge deflection could be completely wrong if fitted to your 3.6 litre.

Aristocat2009,

It's probably easier if you start a new thread in order to let jonc3725 have a chance of getting any responses to his problem. However just to give you my thoughts: A "fixed" oil pressure on 4 litre XJSs is usually the result of a revised sender unit developed by Jaguar. Have a look at this thread:

Paul,

Yep that was my worry. I have had plenty of experience with these sorts of units on boat engines and fitting the wrong sensor does all sorts to the output reading :D . I ordered through David Manners so was hoping that the correct one would be sent

I will check the invoice and get back to you.

Paul,
Just checked the invoice and the part number is C46272 so that seems ok but I'm not %100 sure because this does smack of the incorrect sensor for the gauge. If nobody comes up with a "hey I had this and......." sort of scenario then I may have to get another sensor

Oh the joy of an XJS

oil pressure gauge

Good news, sorted the oil pressure gauge problem.

New sender and two new gauges (well second hand) and the same problem remained. I ran wiring straight between the sender and the gauge to check the loom and no difference.
In the end I bought a 3.6 cluster for pence (a lot less than I paid for the seperate gauges!!) off a famous auction site and put my speedo in it, guess what? yep the oil pressure gauge now works fine :D .
Although every jaguar specialist states the two gauges (V12 and 3.6)are the same (lets face it they have the same part number!) I can only conclude that a 3.6 gauge differs in some way to a V12. Anybody any ideas?
