Not sure how this post relates to ‘Recycling and the JEC’? To get back on topic.

Personally I would be delighted to see my JEC magazine delivered in recyclable material.....provided it protects the content from wet weather deliveries. One paper wrapped magazine arrived today in a very soggy state but the JEC magazine has always arrived pristine.

Only coz the topic had widened to those that are, for political purposes, using the conservation movement to further some sort of anti-capitalist aim. That includes the uLEZ zone that unless you pay up a charge and also a "congestion" charge (amounts to some £22.50) for daring to bring your larger CC-engined car into central London. Since that time lobbying of the GLA, mayor's office, and Transport for London has bought about some flexibility for traditional classic car rallys such as the London to Brighton. And those (like me that've got two) that meet uLEZ requirments coz I've converted to LPG. Did you know that a 3.2L XJ8 actually meets uLEZ? Says something about the efficiency of that engine's design back in the late 90s...

The previous chair, chair-person, chairman, whatever Comrade Horler feels he should've been known as, censored my posts by deleting them arbitarily. And I resigned from the JEC in protest.

As non-traditional plastics leave the packaging industry for the newest bio-degradable material, I'm sure we'll see more of this welcome progress. But not at the expense of us getting a rather good monthly journal -- when not including non-signposted advetorial that is. I'm sure there's an Advertising Standards Authority ruling about this -- but since this is a private club their rules may not apply? Nevertheless, it's there for a reason...

Richard. We appreciate you sharing your knowledge on Jaguar matters and you have a valuable contribution to make but can I please ask you to take note of the Posting Etiquette section (in the red banner at the top of this page) and not to digress from Club issues into politics or personal comments about Club officials.
Your previous posts were deleted because they were not in line with that Posting Etiquette and that very rare action was taken in consultation with Moderators.
I hope you understand that we want to keep these Forums a friendly place where we can discuss our Jaguars without divisive politics and with respect for fellow contributors.

David, as a former moderator myself (back in the good old bad old days of analog modems (FidoNet that became Usenet) I of course would follow whatever a moderator instructs.

Anyone who feels just a little peeved at the way the environmental / conservation movement is enforcing their regulations, by expelling the majority of our favourite classic marques from areas of UK (unless a daily fee is paid) at least now know to whom to direct their ire

Hello Folks
Not sure if most are aware but Maltesers Packaging is recyclable and has the symbol on it as does a lot of other "plastic" packaging including carrier bags, all carrying the symbol, which, are in many cases made from recycled plastic. Horror of horrors, JDC ,for those who don't know these initials (Jaguar Drivers Club) send their Magazine (Class Leading) out in a biodegradable cover, as does the National Trust. To a longer time frame extent it's a well known fact Jaguars are historically recyclable having been made to last a finite time (the lowest of three bids for components) before becoming one with nature and rusting away, returning iron oxide to the Earth, thus serving two purposes one to ensnare purchasers to buy another, newer, perhaps electric one, and two to meet the conservationists designs and aspirations to remove polluting vehicles off the roads, giving them time to fill the pot-holes and stop the batteries rattling themselves to destruction resulting in China/India polluting the World providing replacements prematurely..

But was shocked to find, when half tempted by a nice Daimler 4L (non-supercharged) XJ8 this week that it also met uLEZ (Euro 4)

I am continuing to lobby the <redacted> for acceptance of my two LPG-converted cars.
I'm not getting any response. There is one member who's email address is <redacted> who
is interested in collating all those that have done the LPG conversion, but despite getting
their cars registered as either "GAS BI-FUEL" (DVLA) or "LPG" (DVSA) still have their CO2
emissions listed at original petrol level (389g/km)

When applying for re-registration after conversion and at last MOT, emissions are checked and
a fresh emissions certificate or note of measured emissions is given. That's a required proof of DVLA.
But DVLA doesn't update the V5 details so the <redacted> refuses to accept that those cars meet emisssions'
zone requirments (uLEZ) and still disallows entry into that zone unless the £12.50 "fine" is paid.

Hi Al,
Your point about the membership card is indeed a valid and topical question. It is something I have looked at alternatives for, but as with everything I try and do, instead of looking at a sticking plaster I wonder what the objective of a membership card is? There are a number of thoughts out there, currently I am working on an idea which rewards longevity, so I wonder what your thoughts are on the Forum?

My idea (and it is only that) is:

Only send a card (unless requested) to new members only (obviously all existing members). This card will have a barcode/QR code and the membership number. After a number of years (say 3 years) of continued membership we would "upgrade" you to a bronze membership. Made visible on the website account or something. After 5 years, we upgrade you to Silver (and possibly send you a new "silver" membership card), so and an so forth at various milestones.
The real value lives in what we can do to help members, say exclusive deals for bronze/Silver/platinum members, an extra discount on the Club shop, exclusive access at an event. I dont really know, but something we can build into our offering that allows members to benefit from longevity.....

Initially we could as you say only send a card to new and existing members, then spend the time building up a special offering to reward long term members.....

It is only an idea and not intended to alienate, it is currently just a thought process.

It may be time to at least review why we send a membership card or at least give you the option of receiving one upon renewal?

I don`t really see any advantage in having a membership card other than to wave under the noses of the Parts guy for discount at a Main Dealer outlet.

In my early years with the Club, I do however remember producing the card once to verify my membership at an AGM. Then I became famous and notorious for kicking up the dust in JEC circles and HQ staff never again asked me to produce my card! Having noted my presence, they would usually duck under the table.

Would a Bronze, SIlver or Gold grade card entice me much to remain a member for longer. Not me I`m afraid. Even when I was First Sea Lord of Fareham Creek, I resigned the position as all the gold braid on my hat clashed with me rubber wellie boots. I`m not much for swank!

For what it’s worth I have never once had need of my membership card.
My current card sits in a drawer. Last year’s card is now a book mark so I guess it was not a total waste.
Without value or practical use then the card is another example of unnecessary single use plastic.
I’d prefer a virtual membership card I could add to the wallet on my IPhone.

Hi both,
I do get the feeling that the membership card is not a major factor, but I also cannot ignore those who phone the office shocked/ashamed/horrified they have lost/damaged their card, hence why I think an option to have one, should for the time remain. A membership attached to an "App" as it were is another good idea.

We are exploring this idea already, makes things such as turning up for an event easier. No paperwork, just produce your membership app, scan, entry paid, green light off you go. That kind of thing.

These are certainly good ideas that need exploring far more.

On the note of recycling wrapper for the magazine, as you all are now probably aware, the magazine has arrived in its new paper based packaging. There are some improvements to make after month one, but we are on top of this already. The biggest problem that related to the majority of the issues was the fact the wrapper was oversized. This will be corrected immediately, so the February magazine will provide another opportunity to measure the impact of the change.

Hi James, Happy New Year!

I think the club should just scrap physical membership cards.

It's 2020, my Network Railcard is virtual and shown on my phone when needed, my BP rewards card the same. we don't have physical TV licences, NHS prescription cards etc etc.

Just create an App for our phones with a virtual card showing membership number, name and expiry date. And then put the money saved into new services for us members.

The concept of a rewards-based system for long-term membership is a great idea, but I don't think it has any link to the debate around physical membership card.
