Buying an S Type R

Postby JohnMc50 » Tue Nov 12, 2019 9:42 pm

Hi All
Coming back to the fold after 5 years of fast Audi's,
I'm looking to acquire a late R, I've been looking round and there's a couple of cars sourced from Japan decent spec and low mileage, some very odd colours as well, what are people's thoughts on these cars ?
If I can't find a S Type then I will look for an XJR, going to be a keeper so want the right car :D

Hi John and welcome back.

As you may have noticed STR prices have gone up somewhat since you had yours.
This Dealer is looking for 13k for a 2005

Best of luck with the search.

Thanks Doug
Yeah I sold my 06 for £7k and it was top spec with all mods done, can't believe how much they have gone up, which has persuaded me to jump back in.

Does that mean my 05,2.7d S-Type, currently maturing in my yard becoming one with nature for want of a £50 piece of coolant pipe at the rear of the engine requiring the engine removal, at a cost of over £1000, to replace a rusty leaking pipe on a car with a value of £290 from WBanyCar .com. might be worth a bit more. The 6 inch pipe in question, is, however really in the real world not worth more than a fiver.
I liked this car, and still think, when it was going alright and not breaking down that it is a great car, a much better ride than my XF, however I have learned to my cost not to become emotional about Jaguars, in particular the components that go to make the whole. Just bought a BMW MINI Clubman Estate after 20 years of Jaguars.

I have been in contact with a dealer who has an 07 Stratstone limited edition for £12k ?? A lot of money, I'm sure on the plate it says one of 50 ??
I know it must be one of the last but I'm not sure if the limited edition thing carries a premium or does it ?

Many of the adverts for the Stratstone Specials claimed to have loads of extras fitted, as seen in this ad for no 50:-
This car comes with
Bluetooth Telephone Connectivity, Rain Sensing Windscreen Wipers, Climate Control, Variable Heated Front Seats, Telephone Equipment (Mobile Preparation), Alarm, Paint Metallic, Ski Hatch With Bag, Seats Electric (Driver/Passenger), Heated Windscreen With Timer, In Car Entertainment (Radio/CD), Upholstery Leather, Electric Windows (Front/Rear), Satellite navigation, Electric windows, Power Socket, Traction Control System, Seat Height Adjustment, Cruise control, Centre Rear Seat Belt, Twin Front Cup Holders With Auxiliary Power Socket, Xenon Headlamps With Automatic Levelling

As you can see, nothing really different from any other STR.

Guy Maylem posted this on the Jaguar Forum 12th July 2017

When I worked for Stratstone (Pendragon), we bought the last 50 S-TYPE R models and sold them as a 'Stratstone Edition'.

This amounted to a set of stick on chrome treadplates that had the 'Number ? of 50' etched on them and a certificate to say it was one of the last 50 produced.

We were supposed to stick the replacement treadplates on at the dealership but they looked a bit 'tacky' so at my dealership we didn't bother.

I did throw away the treadplates for, I think ?, either number 29 or 39 when I cleared out my desk !

We had, I think, 22 Jaguar dealerships at the time, so we got 2 or 3 each.

Ended up being drastically reduced to get shut as I remember (sub £40k), we didn't sell many S-TYPE R's anyway, the fact that the XF was due didn't make the last 50 any more desirable !

Sad that I am, I have pictures and (ad) info on Stratstone Specials 11, 24, 25, 27, 36 and 50.

Jaguar Heritage have the very last STR off the production line, in their Collection at Gaydon.

Well I finally managed to find a 57 plated Type R, it's no 45 of the Stratstone run of 50, silver/black leather, 45k and its a keeper, so glad to be back 👍.

Try Eurojag, Auto Reserve or eBay.

Its a case of hunting around until something suitable comes up.

You might also contact a local alloy wheel refurbishment business to see if the damaged wheel can be repaired.

Thanks Mike, just been quoted £400 for a refurbished one, think it's a bit much, keeping my eyes on ebay but will try the others you mentioned.
