Hello,
I'm a Classic Cars French mechanic and I'm currently working on a Jaguar 340 which was stored during the 41 last years !
The car was almost finished when I realised that it was impossible to engage any gears. The clutch adjustment is without any effect...
So I decided to remove the manual with O/D gearbox but to be honest with you, I would like to do it without remove the engine.
The Haynes manual advices to remove in a single unit engine and gearbox.
Has anyone already removed it independently please ?
Kind regards,
Julian

Re: Jaguar 340 manual O/D gearbox removal
No answer ?!?
Anyway, I finally decided to remove engine and gearbox as a single unit. What hell ! But it's done now...
Who knows the way to be sure that the overdrive is in perfect working order ? It would be a very unpleasant thing to note that the O/D is out of order once got in back into the car !!!
Thank you

Re: Jaguar 340 manual O/D gearbox removal
Julian, i made the fatal mistake of assuming my overdrive was ok when i put my drive train back together. Long story short, i had to remove the whole unit and i took my overdrive to. https://www.overdrive-repairs.co.uk where i had it stripped and overhauled. Back in now and working great.
Re: Jaguar 340 manual O/D gearbox removal
I would think you could remove the overdrive , with engine and gearbox in place , as it just bolts on the back of the gearbox , so no big engine and box out job if it's found not to work , worth cleaning the filter , they get very dirty !
Re: Jaguar 340 manual O/D gearbox removal
340jag, it is physically possible to remove the overdrive unit with the drive train in the car by releasing the mountings and tilting the engine up and gearbox down. However, from experiance, refitting the overdrive to the gearbox is not easy, even with the engine out, as allignment of the two sets of splines and holding the pump activator away from the operating cam as you reinsert the unit is difficult, i would suggest next to bl..dy impossible at an angle and working in a confined space under the car. If i had reason, hopefully never, to remove the overdrive again, i would take the engine out, and change the clutch plate while it was out.
