Boot Lamps/Release Button Not Working

Postby Andy P » Thu Jun 29, 2017 5:41 pm

Boot Lamps/Release Button Not Working.
Searched electrical section of this forum and found BB's thread.
After reading, found the harness, took it apart and found this.

Quite a few broken wire's
[/pic]
Repaired all wires, lights work :) but not the button :( ,have checked continuity through button with multi-meter but no sound(I think that's the correct way to do it) so I guess it's the button which I believe is a common fault, will take out for further examination,I can hear it clicking when pressing the button, boot opens fine from inside car and on the fob.
Thanks to BB for his original thread a great help.
Take Care.

Hi,
Just to update this thread:
While I had the boot lining out I re-glued the lights back in as one had been pushed back inside,at first I thought it was missing but found it once I took the lining out.

Then proceeded on to looking at the boot release button, you have to take off the external chrome finisher and the prongs that are on it are plastic so you have to be extra careful when undoing and doing them up.Once you have the finisher off you can remove the button by undoing the two small screws.

Button and Micro-switch
The micro-switch is separate from the push button and it looked as if the solder had gone off somehow so I re-soldered the wires back on and I had continuity through the switch again :) .
Put it all back together being careful not to break any of those plastic prongs and then connected the plugs and I have a boot that open's on the button again.

Just to continue here is the small soldering station bought from Maplins.
I chose this one because it had a fine point end on it.

All back together and working again now, just one thing missing from the boot and that's the warning safety triangle,I shall put that on my shopping list :D .
Hope this helps someone who might have the same sort of problem.
I just get so much enjoyment working on them  .
Enjoy your Jaguar's and Daimler's.

As the release button was not working, I fitted a "new one", actually a good used button I could get for 15 € (£13). To no effect. What surprises me is that it operates from the button on the dash board - I can hear the motor operating the latch. I am afraid changing the motor will not help. The connexion to the motor is OK. Am I missing something :?

Hello phirouyer.
You haven't said if you have checked the wiring which runs to the boot release button.
The wires run under the right hand boot hinge.
Did you check the new used boot button for continuity?
The switch in the car has different wires going to the motor than the button.
Does the boot open using the key fob?
If it does then it all points to broken wires under the hinge I'm afraid.
Hope that helps.
Good luck anyway.

The old button was faulty, there is no doubt (actually the culprit is the microswitch). The new used button is OK, i have checked it for continuity. But I have found a broken wire under the hindge. There is not much loose wire to play with, but I could repair it and now it works ! :D
Thank you all for your advices.
In the same time, I found two other black broken wires : these are the earth of the registration number lights. - Some time ago, discovering that these lights were not working, I had fitted an external earth in order to pass the MOT, but I shall reconnect the proper wires very soon. It seems that wires under the hindge are prone to breaking.
