5 Spoke Alloys - Wheel Nut Size??

Postby MikeB » Sat Jan 10, 2009 9:59 am

Hello,

Wondered if anyone can help please.

When I purchased my 4.0 1994 Coupe it came with the 16" 20 spoke alloys from the V12.

These are a little corroded so I have identified a set of refurbished 16" 5 spoke alloys, which I'm collecting next Friday. I would like to return to original spec.

I'm concerned that my current wheel nuts may be the wrong size for the 5 spokes.

If you have the 5 spokes, would you be kind enough to measure the length of the wheel nut please? :)

Oh, and is there any interest in my 20 spokes?

Cheers,

Mike.

5 Spoke Alloys - Wheel Nut Size??

Mike,

If I can scrape the ice and snow off my car, I'll try and measure a wheel nut for you.

Forgive me if I'm telling you something you already know but, if you want to put the car back to original spec, I assume that you know there are two types of five-spoke wheels?

The ones used on the late AJ6-engined cars have a groove across each spoke at the rim end. The same wheel was fitted to some XJ40s

The ones fitted to AJ16-engined cars have no groove. They should also have a diamond-cut finish on the face of the spokes with painted inner surfaces. Many people powder-coat the whole wheel when refurb'ing them, but you can find people who will do the job as per original spec.

5 Spoke Alloys - Wheel Nut Size??

Guys,

Thanks for your replies.

I've sourced the wheels from a Jaguar alloy specialist in SW Birmingham. They're off a late XJS.

I've thought long and hard about the finish and decided to go for powder coated as opposed to original diamond turned and eggshell inner as my Jag is in regular use. Goes out in all weathers (apart from salted roads when the Focus takes over!). Not quite a daiy driver, but not a show car.

He states the standard shaft nuts are best, although research states you should have long shaft? I've got standard ones now so will try and see.

Cheers,

Mike.
