Wheel Nuts

Good morning,

I have been advised by my mechanic to replace the wheelnuts on my 2003 XJ6. I would be grateful if anyone could advise me if there anything I need to be aware of when buying them. I have been told to look on eBay and not use a Jag main dealer.

I`ve had loads of new wheel nuts for S-type and X350 from eBay over the years. No problems with them at all. Buy only new items. Second hand nuts are likely to be battered with squashed chrome outer casings which probably makes them as worn as the ones you currently have on the car! Prices are cheap as chips. No need tpo buy the pricey offerings from Main Dealers. Always buy a few extra to keep in the ashtray. Sooner or later you will end up having to replace the lot!!

The 19mm chrome finishers squash when people use hammer guns or poorly fitting wheel wrenches. If you can`t get a nut off because it is squashed, then take a hammer and sharp 1/4" chisel and chop down through the cap until you can lever if off. With the finisher removed, you will find that an 18mm socket will remove the remains of the nut!

This is the most common problem with these nuts. They are fine provided removal is carried out with care. Once the hammer gun monkeys get at them, the life of the soft chrome outer shell becomes very limited. I stand over any tyre fitter when they remove my XJR wheels. I`d rather cause the guy some annoyance than find that he had wrecked my wheel nuts through poor technique.

And another thing! How often do you see a tyre guy tightening wheel nuts sequentially around the circumference of the wheel rim? Few know that you tighten nuts diametrically across the diameter of the rim to even out the stress, ensure nuts stay tight with the rim properly and evenly seated on the wheel hub. Groan over.

Hello. I'm not sure. I bought the car last August, taking a risk as it is high mileage and a cheap forecourt price. I took it straight to my mechanic for a once over and this was something he advised that I do.

As an aside, the car has been an absolute dream. I got it for £1,400 having done 199k miles. I've had it services, it went straight through the MOT with no problems and I am working through a list of niggles such as keyfob not working, which have all been surprisingly easy to fix.

It has the air suspension and 3 litre V6 and drives like a dream. It the third time I have owned a Jag and by far the best so far.

I guess it depends on how fussy you want to be,I purchased my X350 in September 2017 with 35500 miles on the clock,despite the low mileage the Sepangs,nuts & locking nuts(all origional) were a mess,the wheels had been refurbed,if you can call it that,somebody had painted over the rust & damage,the wheel nuts & locking nuts were a mess,the locking nuts I got re-chromed,after buying a set off ebay which started to show rust in weeks(!),as for the other wheel nuts I had seen an ad for chromed nuts with the Growler on them,they were not easy to find & not cheap but they look nice IMO!
