project update, some small jobs

Postby Brakebuster » Sat Nov 29, 2008 10:28 pm

i have been very busy rebuilding my IRS of late, but that is all back in the car now and i have moved on to some smaller projects , a big write-up on the IRS will follow soon

as for the small jobs, well, they are small( ish ) jobs, lol

i have installed a brand new handbrake cable, this is actually part of the IRS install, but i treated it as a separate job, getting the old one out was a bit tricky, as i had to remove the drivers seat to get to the handbrake lever mechanism , once out i could disconnect the cable from the lever, and draw out the old cable complete with over-sleeve from the welded in tube that goes through the rear bulkhead under the rear seat, the cable had been removed from the calipers some months ago when the cage was removed...once the new one had been pushed into the tube with a little grease on it, i had to try and get it over the newly refurbished handbrake forks on the IRS , to do this i had to shorten the adjuster tube on the bottom of the lever, i took a total of 60mm from it to allow the correct operation of all the parts , then i adjusted the nuts so i got 3/4 clicks out of the handbrake , i think the reason for the reduction in the length of the tube comes from new pads on new discs on a new ( non-stretched ) cable, i will have to deal with any probs in the future , lol

the second small job was to refurbish the throttle pedal ( TP ), and as the drivers seat was already out access was a little easier, but not much , the TP is held in with three screws , and there are two cables onto the lever, the pedal pivots on a fulcrum in the frame, in which there are two nylon bushes, these need replacing to minimise sideways slack in the pedal, and for a smoother operation of the pedal , removing the screws was easy , the cables were a little tricky as you cant quite get both arms and your head in there to see what you are doing, but keeping at it i won it over in the end, removal of the old bushes is a simple quarter turn and they come out, the new ones go in the same way , with a little white grease to aid operation , a new pedal rubber ( plastic ) and a new floor mounted pedal stop and the thing looks like new after bolting it back in ,

one small hick-up, to get one pair of new TP bushes, i had to buy a pack of ten of them , nudge-nudge wink-wink, lol ;) :D

oh, and i found another welding job, nothing major, just a little repair of the rear arch where it meets the lower valance lip under the petrol filler, i have a full rear quarter for repairs, so i cut a small section out to weld in once all the rot had been cut away , about two hours work in total ,

so i'm still at it...
