Re: Engine tapping when cold 4.0L
Hello Folks,
I carried out an engine flush/oil/filter change and the tapping noise on start up was reduced but its still fairly loud.. It continues as before until the engine reaches operating temp then disappears. I have been advised that the tapping is caused by contamination in the VVT assy between the solenoid & the main body of the assy & is a not uncommon problem. I've also been advised to give it another flush & use a full synthetic 5W30.
Before doing that has anyone ever cured this problem & what did you do to fix it?
Appreciate any advice. Rgds. Charlie.

Re: Engine tapping when cold 4.0L
Just an update on this~i've given it 2 flushes already using Wynns, following the instructions and i still have the tapping noise on cold start which eventually goes off when the engine warms up. Altho it would appear that the flushes have been unsuccessful i intend to give it one more go. Just wondered if anyone had carried out successive flushes and perhaps had achieved a better result? any help appreciated. Rgds. Charlie.

Flushing can only but help. I use Wynn Engine Flush before an oil drop every 5000 miles. It helps break down solids which can cause reduced oil flow at the VVT units. I`d say it is worth one more try after which new VVT gear might be the only answer. My old 8 S-type was beginning to exhibit noisy VVT gear at around 90k miles. I`d also used Wynns regularly but eventually concluded that the VVT was aging and would sooner or later require to be replaced. Nothing lasts for ever.
