Steering Rack, can it be refurbed DIY?

1969 Series 2 - 4.2

I have checked the steering rack prior to work on the suspension. On the passenger side there is quite a bit of play when I move the road wheel (when it is jacked up) from side to side.
The other side is fine.

Looking at a parts diagram there is a nut and a spring and I have seen you can tighten this to create friction. Would tightening this nut be the answer?

If not can I rebuild part of the steering rack as it just seems worn on the one side?

Hello Azzura,

is the play in the knuckle joint where the track rod connects to the rack? If so they are normally adjusted by shims so should be quite a practical job. Probably worth replacing teh boot at the same time?

Hi Alec, I know you have replied to at least one of my previous posts from last year so thanks again.

I am looking for a bit of guidance on the rear suspension, have you worked on this?

In particular I have seen the car sits a little high at the back. The drive shafts do not sit straight, pointing downwards from the diff to the wheels. The rear wheels have a little bit of positive camber and the car does not feel planted in corners. There are red Koni shock absorbers all round. I just wondered if whoever fitted them used the correct length springs on the rear. Information from the forums on riding heights tells me it could be at least 1 1/2" too high, a level on the sills confirms it sits higher at the rear of the car.

Any advice most welcome.

Hello Roger,

The knuckle joint I am referring to is the same whether power or not,. The other point of wear on a steering rack are the bushes at either end of the rack tube, if the rack itself can be moved up and down that indicates wear of that bush.

I haven't worked on the rear suspension but it doe sound as though the springs are wrong, although it's worth a check to see if any packers have been used under the springs? (I can't imagine why, but it's worth a check)
Certainly you should have some slight negative camber on the rear.
