Finally after days of searching through circuit diagrams and reading forums i found the problem of the front fog lights not working and none of the center switch panel leds worked
It was fuse 3 in the engine compartment fuse box. This appears totaly unrelated to the switch panel but got the advise from one of the American forums saying that this fuse is probably the culprit because it is not un common for the alarm sounder's batteries to fail once a car passes 10 years of age. These corrode and trip the fuse. The answer is to dis- connect the sounder and replace the fuse which i did and hey presto the switch leds and front fogs now work. Just shows how valuable these forums are.

Brilliant detective work! I'm sure this will prove to be a most useful post for XK8/R owners. That sounder battery has a lot to answer for. Now, all we need is for someone experienced in electronics to set up a sounder exchange service replacing the duff rechargeable batteries. Any volunteers?
