Brake vacuum tank

Postby jathastings » Sat Aug 12, 2017 9:38 am

Just wondering if anyone has got rid of the vacuum tank and so simplified the system.
I assume the downside would be no brakes without the engine running - just like a modern car?
Any thoughts

John,
I cannot advocate dispensing with the vacuum tank. Try convincing your Insurer that it was not necessary after you hit that brick wall !
Further investigation will reveal that is not the same as a modern car

I would have thought that on a practical basis, removing the tank would have an effect on pedal effort required to apply the brakes after a few pushes as it is the reservoir for the servo system. If the engine stalls for any reason then there will be no assistance for the servo and I imagine the brakes will then be pretty ineffective. After all it was put there for a reason. On another note, changing a safety critical system like the brakes needs to be notified to your insurers as such a change will nullify your cover. Not sure they would find that acceptable.

Hello 340Jag,

it may be an old modification but that does not mean that it is a good one. What benefit is there in removing the reservoir as I can see none?
It's hardly a complicated or unreliable component?

Hello 340Jag,

it's up to the owner but I still maintain that it is better with than without. Should the engine cut out while running, there will be no real vacuum assistance should it be needed.
