Squeak squeak squeak from wheels....

Hi,

just bought my first classic car - finally catching up with my first Car Crush the Jaguar XJ-S. She's 1988 3.6 Auto in Red. in good nick formally owned by an Enthusiast who knew how to look after his car.
Upon driving it home when travelling at low speeds 5 - 15 i could sometimes hear a rhythmic squeaking coming from either the wheels or the axle.
When i sped up the rate of squeaking sped up - ditto slowing down obviously. So i guess it must be related to turning wheels / axle etc...

anyone heard of this?

Which wheel(s) is it coming from - front, back or both? It is unlikely to be wheel bearings but may be caused by disc pads rubbing lightly on worn discs that have some run out. If it's only from the back wheels it may be similar to a problem I had with an X308 which had loud squeak from the rear left wheel at low speeds that you could only really hear if a window was open. This became inaudible above 30 mph. It was due to a faulty universal joint in the drive shaft on that side.

thanks so much for coming back on this.

Its hard to tell is the short answer - pretty sure its one of the back ones. Its exactly as you describe - its goes away over 25 say and its not all the time.
I think i'll take her in for a health check.

'88 3.6 Good choice, I may be slightly biased though.

Noises are difficult to pinpoint, at the rear there are many U/Js, bearings, brake parts and exhaust system parts that could be the source. Either way, a minor problem and nothing to worry about. All these things can be sorted out in time.
