New MOT Sunday 2oth May

Postby ng4xjs » Mon May 21, 2018 11:06 pm

I note with interest that the new MOT rules came into play on Sunday to keep us in line with the rest of the EU. I find it difficult to get my head around the fact that we here have some of the laxest rules in Europe when it come to the safety of our vehicle. Whilst we perhaps dread the prospect of submitting to the the MOT inspector, they are there for our safety (and other road users). Looking through the new regs (unless you are unfortunate enough to have a modern diesel) I really don't think there is anything to give rise to concern. Emission are the big thing, but really in everyone's best interest to get right.

I'm sure we all watch with interest as our vehicles come around for their annual inspection.

I was looking around on MOT failure data:

https://good-garage-guide.honestjohn.co.uk/mot/jaguar

Most fail on Lamps, Reflectors and Electrical Equipment. How difficult can it be to check lights and horn etc before booking in the test? In fact I doubt many owners ever check them seeing the number driving about with a light out, very noticable when the clocks are adjusted in the autumn.

Interestingly F Types tend to fail on tyres, now I know there expensive but again, considering their the only thing keeping you on the road why wouldn't owners check tread, pressure and condition regularly?

The MOT is certainly a good thing IMO, there are many critical things that can go wrong that are difficult to spot without a proper garage lift even for a competant home mechanic.

We tend to look at this from our own narrow perspective of enthusiasts with at least an appreciation of what a car is and how it works, if not a capability to undertake basic DIY repairs. There are plenty of drivers out there who haven't the faintest idea or the remotest interest in looking after the transport that gets them from A to B, and who may not even submit to occasional, never mind regular, professional servicing. The annual MOT test goes some way to protecting the rest of us from these owners.
