I may be stating the obvious, but I don't think it's worth that money unless, at a push, bought as a long term investment (again!)and keep the mileage at the present level, and that obviously means all the risks associated with investments generally.

It will never be viewed like an e-type, it's likely there will always be a celing value and that's surely over the current ceiling.

I'd hate to buy such a car and know I couldn't drive it without the value diving. If you can see past the mikeage and ultra concours condition, there are loads of nice XJSs out there for significantly less.

It's interesting to see that the XJS is starting to attract speculative money. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing? It obviously has the benefit of making our pride and joy worth more and makes it more likely that a restoration will make financial sense so less of our cars will go to the scrap heap but it also makes it harder for new enthusiasts to buy in. I don't think we'll see the XJS get into the silly money that E Types attract but we're seeing mint examples advertised at £40-£50k. Late Celebrations convertibles are routinely advertised at £35k and have probably doubled in value over the last 5 years. Where is this going?

The £35K - 40K example might be worth it. It will, no doubt, need a further £5K - £10K or so for complete recommissioning for someone with OCD - but what an amazing example it could then be. £50K might match the cost involved with a major ground-up restoration of a XJS at a well know specialist.

Take a look at the below - this is my ready reckoner / bags banker that I believe I have shared before;
Phase One: optimistic pricing by private individuals and independent Classic Car dealers that don’t sell at that price (testing the water)
Phase Two: pricing stabilizes as average/poor examples are scrapped - decrease in supply of good/excellent examples
Phase Three: Good/Excellent examples start to command a premium. Rare model derivatives significantly increasing in value
Phase Four: General price increases for most model derivatives as the market starts to “appreciate” the model
Phase Five: The take-off phase: stratospheric pricing as the market piles into the model

I think Coupes generally are in Phase Three except 1970s manuals and 1980 variants (p-digital) that could be Phase Four. Convertibles, especially Celebration 4.0 or rare late 6.0 variants, are firmly Phase Four now I think.

I doubt that XJ-S will make it to Phase Five but you never know!

I'm an avid 'watcher' (stalker more like) of XJS's and XJR6's on various sites and am often intrigued by the prices initially asked.
At the moment I am watching this which, superficially, seems ok; no details at all but looks nice and shiny!
It hasn't sold so has been relisted:

Also been watching this as I have a hankering after another one; comprehensive details from the vendor, a lot rarer than the XJS so why only roughly half the price? It's been relisted a couple of times.

Just had an update from classictrend.eu and they are showing on average a 22.2% increase in the last 2yrs and 2.2% in the last 3 months. The average ADS prices being £11609 and average auction being £14631. This does include the US and EU countries, where in some cases prices are even higher than the U.K.
If a car is rare it is like any commodity they command higher prices, so within reason they are worth it.
I have never bought a car to make a profit, but I must say that when you see the prices going up it does encourage me to spend more on improving the vehicle. If this did not happen, I believe you would get an increase of cars being scrapped. When people spend more on their cars it keeps the industry going such as specialised dealers and after market spares manufacturing. The increase in value of the car makes it easier for me to justify improving it to my wife as it now can be deemed to be an asset. I often use the analogy that if I bought a modern car at the time I bought my XJS the price would have plummeted. To sum up I believe higher prices are necessary to help pay for the upkeep of the vehicle and the classic car market afloat.

Exactly! Sensibly managed we indulge in a most enjoyable and rewarding hobby that, in effect, costs us nothing.
