Jaguar XJ-S - S.O.S - Can you help?

Postby vipervisual » Fri Jun 15, 2018 12:50 pm

Hello,
Another day another problem :( Love this car waited so long to buy one. Its had a full service everything checked out. Was shaky to start when purchased 6 months ago, started working properly after I cleaned the ECU connectors. However after having the suspension fixed just got it back and its cutting out and behaving very badly!
Please see the video I posted, link below. Unable to control the revs. Could it be a richness problem? Please help me.

Close to giving up and very sad.

Thanks again to all of you for your support and advice from the beginning.

Don't give up!
I don't know anything about the 3.6 but others will chime in.
At least it is actually running which is a better basis for diagnosis than some that have appeared in these pages!

As Steve says don't give up! Its probably something fairly simple.
Does the car drive normally but misbehaves at idle? If so I would suspect the idle control has an issue. There is a stepper motor in there that could have got stuck perhaps?

Thank you for your support. Which is the stepper motor in the diagram? I am having the ECU tested.

Remind us what year your car is, it makes a difference.
Best to add it as a signature.

The stepper motor is item 17.
As Pop says, it does help a lot if you give us the exact year and model so we can give better suggestions.

Then it won't have the stepper motor setup, the early 3.6 was controlled in a similar fashion to the V12 engine.
I'm not familiar enough with the early ones to offer much help, sorry.

Check that the throttle butterfly is clean; I understand that these can get gunged up and cause all sorts of problems.
Vacuum leaks will also cause problems.
Have a browse through this, it might help.

I'm having the ECU tested. If that doesn't work to solve the problem is there anyone that is willing to assist me. I'm located in Leicester.
I don't know what else to do. Had it 6 months, struggling to keep trying. My mechanic is very helpful and has tried too.
Guidance needed from someone with experience.

Also no hot air coming through, not even blowing at all. Could this be linked? Was fine before.
