This car has been advertised for a while and I see its now in the auction. I can't decide whether its worth 12K but it certainly seems a rare opportunity. Here's the link to the auction lot:

What do you think?

I can't decide whether its worth 12K ...What do you think?

Only a genuine bidder will answer that question.

Speaking personally, I think £12k can be spent more wisely.

One owner 17000 mile 3.6 Cab at XK60 Auction

Postby brycabriolet » Tue Aug 05, 2008 11:50 am

Hi being the owner of a well known concours car i will be very interested to see what this car makes at auction i dont think that the car will be as clean underneath as my own car is. A car is only worth what someone is willing to pay and to seek a high price on low milage is abit misleading looking at the pictures the engine bay looks good but to me the under body suspention ect needs to be clean as well ask bleasie i have my own car which at 38000 is still low milage also 1986 insured at a fixed value of £15000 simply because it is as new as near to when it left the factory it has to be for me to have been able to win the concours events that i have Lets see what it makes if anyone is going tothe auction at the weekend they might let us know how much it makes and if its like new underneath Please keep info for the xj-sc coming in Cheers Bryan Thomas

Re Cabriolet at auction.
Why not buy a cheaper car and do some work on it, there are over 60 currently for sale.

That's an interesting question. Just suppose you buy an immaculate low mileage example for £12K, it won't necessarily want for nothing beyond being used more and it should at least hold its value, and you might win some prizes if so inclined. Or you could buy an average example for £4K, deal with the usual XJS ravages beyond what the previous owners have managed, fine if you're a DIY man but less so if you're paying a garage to maintain it. You'll never bring the latter up to the condition of the former, but over 5 years say it could cost you almost as much. Personally I prefer a well used, honest car that didn't cost me much in the first place, but each to their own.

hI
YOU DO NOT APPEAR TO HAVE ANY ROAD FUND LICENCE
C 179 DWD IS NOT RECOGNISED BYDVLA

You will find the correct entry for my car in the JEC XJS Register (I think that I originally misinformed you of the reg but since corrected) as D179 DWP.

HI CHRIS
still does not register with either reg number.
which is what I did yesterday in case I had it wrong.
Good job I am not a Copper

You'd be a pretty bad one if you were, I ran the simple Directgov Vehicle Enquiry which turns up the following and as you can see my car is currently taxed (it had not been for the preceding 5 years):

The enquiry is complete

The vehicle details for D179 DWP are:

Date of Liability 01 12 2008
Date of First Registration 01 08 1986
Year of Manufacture 1986
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 3590CC
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type Petrol
Export Marker Not Applicable
Vehicle Status Licence Not Due
Vehicle Colour GREY
Vehicle Type Approval null

This brings be back to the question of what are you trying to do, publish a register of cars or owners.? If you include the latter you need to be careful od the Data Protection Act, especially if you intend to offer it for sale commercially. You would need to have a data protection poilicy and obtain the consent of each owner to hold and use their details, and they must be able to opt out the details being passed to third parties. That's if you come under the duristiction of UK Law of course and are not offshore somewhere. Good job I'm not a lawyer, eh?

Personally I think keeping a register of the cars and whether they are still on the road or registered is of far greater interest and better reflects the enormous effort you must have put into compiling it and I don't mean to be a wet blanket by bringing up the above issue.

HI Chris can just say that John Bleasdale as been hard at work for the last 18 years trying to biuld up a genuine record as to how many cabriolets still exist it is not to make money and there is no financal gain whatsoever it simply for jaguar enthusiasts to have a record the reason he checks with dvla is simple tofind out if there still alive and well i have to say i use the directgov webb site my self i to am unable to see any details on C179DWP i can only asume that you payed for a serch i honestly cannot get any results either

The vehicle details for D179 DWP are:

Sorry for any confusion guys the correct reg is D179DWP (D not C prefix) as stated earlier and the VIN per the V5 and vehicle information plate is 132044. The former at least can be confirmed by doing a free search via the DVLA website. As I said before I really do appreciate the time spent getting all the car details but all I wanted to point out was that collecting and making available car owner details (free or otherwise) might create data protection issues. Its a diffferent matter for the Club registers as they have a data protection policy.

Do keep up the good work Bleasie, I spend a lot of time researching the cars I own and do appreciate what you are doing, and I hope my comments are taken in the spirit that they are intended. I also hope more members join in discussion of the Cabriolet. I used to own an E-type FHC series 1, which was made in similar numbers to the Cab and so I can see its classic potential. The way my 3.6 manual drives has a period feel not dissimilar to the E, but at a fraction of the cost. I wonder if anyone has done an article comparing the two?

Yes, it's a rare opportunity to waste 12k! Personally, I think only a real nutcase would spend five figures on an XJS. OK, so it may have relatively low mileage, but I can't imagine why you'd want to buy an XJS and not drive it. Mine gets used every day...

I saw the car on Friday. It was certainly very tidy. Difficult to see properly underneath but it seemed commensurate with a 16,000 mile car that is over 20 years old. It was reasonably good but it's most defintely not concours underneath.

The thing that most concerned me was the paintwork. It looked far too fresh - you now that just resprayed 2-pack look? I looked everywhere for overspray indication. All the screen and door edges looked fine and then I eventually found it - a 1" strip of gold overspray on the rear hood. So I personally think it had had a full respray at some time in it's life but, a very, very good one.

So was it worth the £11,500 that it made? I don't know, I guess something is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. Of the items that sold at Bonhams, I thought that many of them made far higher money than I expected. Something to do with the occasion and the nature of the attendees, I expect. Specialist auctions like this often generate strong prices.

Personally I'd have rather had the Lister-converted 7 litre cabriolet that also made £11500. At least you could drive that without worrying unduly about the mileage and it has great street presence!

Each to their own!

They probably said that about XKs, E-types and MkIIs at one time or another! But I'd agree you woudn't buy a top money one as a daily driver. Be interesting to see where prices go over the next few years, we're already past the crossover point where early XK8s are worth less than the last XJS.
