Distributor Rebuild
Moderator:LJR
I have just refitted the distributor to my 4.2 litre S1 following a rebuild by the Distributor Doctor and the engine is transformed. I am particularly pleased with the smoothness of idle, and pick-up.
We tend to pay a lot of attention to points, plugs, timing and carburettors but forget that distributors wear and springs weaken over time (at least I do!). The rebuild was worth every penny and Martin Jay at the Distributor Doctor was very efficient and helpful.
Just thought I would share.

Re: Distributor Rebuild
Hello Robbie,
good to hear. I've long thought when people say they replace their distributor with such as a 123 and the car runs much better. If the original, as yours was, is not working right it's no surprise.

Re: Distributor Rebuild
An equivalent 123 (includes new cap and leads too) is £300 from SC Parts -- I'd like to stay OEM with my 4.2L (ex-420G) engined Mk IX (my last restore) but fear there's just too much wear there.
The Owen Sedanca's only done 23k built on a '72MY series 1 chassis so there's no point changing that.
Could you give an indication of how much Distributor Doctor costs for a series 1 distributor recon?

Hello Richard,
my Triumph (six cylinder) rebuild by the doctor with the addition of one or two consumable spares was about £150, but about three years ago.

Thanks Alec. I'll give 'em a bell and report back -- specialist craft skills available like these are worth reporting in forum

Re: Distributor Rebuild
Hello folks,
I'm a long-time member from Canada, but only recently started viewing here. It looks like a great resource.
I've swapped a S3 dizzy, with coil and amp into a S1. It's straight swap, and eliminates the possible dwell irregularities that come with shaft slop. These used bits may cost less than a new one.
Good luck,
Rob

Re: Distributor Rebuild
Many years ago, I bought a brand new series 3 electronic distributor at Spares Day for £15. I think I sold it a decade later for £30. Those were the days eh?
