Getrag 5 speed in S1 e-type

I have a Getrag 5 speed in my S1 e-type which has a stiff 1st & reverse selection all other gears are excellent.
The box was fitted by the previous owner, I have had the car over 10 years & has always suffered with this problem but has not got worse in that time. I have now reached the time in life to sort this out if possible.
Can anybody advise me if this is a standard feature with this box or can it be improved, if it can, can anybody advise who may be the best person to do the work.

My series 1.5 has a Borg Warner T5, 5 speed box fitted by previous owner, which has an extremely stiff change from 1st to 2nd. However, that difficulty stops as it warms up - does yours? If not, this sounds like a selector problem, but that's a lay suggestion. A solution I've had suggested is to put thinner oil in tmy box, which I'm reluctant to do.
