Smell

Postby steve_m » Sun Mar 11, 2018 11:11 am

I'm getting exhaust fumes into the boot of the car.
There are no obvious exhaust leaks so I am guessing that the boot seal is past it's best and the airflow around the back is dragging fumes in.
The lid closes firmly and doesn't rattle around as I have adjusted the latch.
David Manners supplies non-original replacements, http://www.jagspares.co.uk/manners/part ... 528%2F1%2A:
does anyone have any experience of them?
The problem seems to have become worse since the twin pipe back boxes were fitted but I didn't really notice due to the smell from the petrol leak at the time.

Is it possible that the new back boxes weren't fitted properly? Are the exhaust tips sticking out far enough to put the exhaust fumes into clean air flow that will take them away or are they getting caught up in the vortex behind the car and so coming back into the boot?

That had occurred to me but wouldn't he exhaust velocity overcome the backdraft?
Also, shouldn't the boot seal keep the fumes out?
It would be most uncomfortable should I ever have the need to smuggle someone across the border.

I've a feeling the boot isn't sealed because the cabin vents out via the back parcel shelf to the vents in the butresses? Can't recall the exact mechanism
..........and don't worry about the body in the boot. He's long past caring!

Vents in the buttresses?
Haven't heard that mentioned before.
Have to take more care with the jet washer!

I think that I have figured out where the smell is coming from.
The exhaust is parting company with the flange right in front of the nearside back box; sounds like a really, really big tractor on that side.
Unfortunately I am in Chesham which is about 70 miles from home. Still have to go to Oxford to check the boat, then on to Kemble (if anyone else is going?) and then back home again.
Fortunately I'm only 2 miles from the brother-in-law who is a dab hand at mechanical things so we may able to cobble something together out of a few empty tinnies.
Fingers crossed 'cos it is really, really loud!

Well, here was the problem which probably explains the smell; the pipe had separated completely from the back box.
I tried uploading a couple of photos but despite resizing to almost nothing (750 pixels) it wouldn't let me as it kept saying the file was too big at 2500 pixels which was the original file size.

Anyway;
Before - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bV5fZXc ... jreload=10

After - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PYXfEEcW4M

Sounded much better in real life, the wet was recorded better than the exhaust.
Unfortunately found a nasty split in the nearside sill/floorpan seam; more expense :(

I just tried the links and there was no video! Bizarre. Going down the pub.
