Wheel cleaning.

Postby Mackie » Sun Feb 25, 2018 12:43 am

Gave the old girl a lovely wash and wax today and then cleaning up the Kent wheels... OMG.

The wheels are not lacquered so it is suggested I use a wash, polish and a touch up with Pledge or the likes. HAHAHAHAHA! Watta joke. No chance. I’ve used the car three or four times and the brake dust was ingrained on the front wheels. So, I looked for a product and heard about Korrosol. I tried it and I thought it was pretty useless. Yes, I got some of the purple colour, but it did not shift the stubborn stuff, even on a washed wheel.

In the end I used Autosol and a lot of elbow grease to get them into a much better shape. Obviously, not being lacquered makes them susceptible to dirt, and it still has some white spotting on the metal that i’m not happy with, but the Autosol did a much better job than the so called brake dust killer. I also gave the wheels three coats of Poorboys wheel sealant to help in the future.

Can anybody suggest a better product than this Korrosol for my wheels? I’ve heard of something called Iron X being quite good.

Help or suggestions welcome as always.

Bilt Hamber Auto Wheel Cleaner 1 Litre - saves a me a lot of hard work! Spray on, leave for a few mins (do not let it dry on though), watch it change colour then jet wash off. Best wheel cleaner I have ever used.

I have used on my XJ40 wheels and Merc wheels. I will also use on my XJS wheels soon. Please note that my wheels are lacquered but the product says that it is safe and not acidic - however I would test on a inconspicuous area first just to be sure.

Thanks, Rich

I think that’s the one I used, Rich. Bilt Hamber Korrosol. Maybe I didn’t use it properly, but I was unimpressed.

Strange... I usually jet the wheels then apply a generous amount of the wheel cleaner - leave to soak for a few mins (wheels turn very red/purple colour) then jet the wheels. Aways come up sparking...

Maybe it’s because they are not lacquered wheels? I’ll no doubt be cleaning them again soon. Maybe i’ll use the jet washer this time. Also have IRON X to try.
