As one door closes...

Attempted to get some dents on the old girl sorted at last. The driver’s door was taken apart and now no longer opens via the exterior handle. The dent people are rightly embarrassed and have offered to sort it, but cannot get the part.

Admittedly, the driver’s door has always felt a bit clunky and just not right. It seems to have given up the ghost. I now have to go in the passenger side to open the driver’s door. ARGH!

Apparently it is a clip which secures the door rods which has gone (according to dent people). I really have no idea what part I should be looking for, so I’ve asked the dent people to speak with a Jag parts person. I am waiting to hear.

Very frustrating as I also noticed a damp patch on the headlining whilst driving back, which makes me wonder if the sun roof has an issue.

Following my instrument binnacle change before Christmas, I’ve noticed the fuel gauge is not registering correctly. Got to take it back to the Jag Workshop where the job was performed.

Otherwise, I enjoyed taking her out for a spin on the A1.

The joys of running a nearly 30 year old car. There are many small 'challenges' that happen along the way, I find that as long as they don't leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere it can be strangely enjoyable to overcome problems and you get to know your car a little better each time, I guess it is part of the hobby. :)

With the door card off it should be easy to see what hase come adrift, it's quite old and simple technology and I expect something has become dislodged rather then broken. A bit of lateral thinking can often provide a solution.

I have no experience with the sunroofs on an xjs but my old Granada suffered from blocked drains, again maybe a close look would reveal the problem.

Almost certainly the fuel gauge will be poor connections, either on the 3 nuts that hold it in place or an earth, All xjs's seem to suffer at some time or other.

Either way, chin up 8)

Hi,
The only rod retaining clip that is not available is part No BD4460 and if you google XJS BD4460 at this moment you will see one for sale on eBay. As stated previously it is not a complicated system to see what the issue is once the door card is off. I have had mine off numerous times for various jobs and it is an easy process.
Good luck
Alan

Are you sure about that part number, Alan? I googled and even tried Manners and SNG Barratt and a search for that part number yields nothing.

Not quite the right part number. Should be BD44650
I vaguely recall replacing one of those but I can't remember if it was that door or indeed that car!
I'll have a dig in my spares box - I may have one!

Sorry it is my mistake, but hopefully you might get sorted out.

Hi All,
My drivers side door drops slightly when opened and doesn't close and seamlessly as the passenger side. What do I need to do to tighten it up?

Thanks

Hi,
This was covered in the “bodywork” section.
