Interesting little tips and snippets

Postby davidr » Wed Feb 07, 2018 7:45 pm

Hello All - I have started putting together a few technical magazine articles for Nigel on things that I think may be of interest to members. (For example I took a 1mm cutting disc to an old auxiliary air valve last weekend to do an article on how it works).
Then I realised that there is an enormous wealth of knowledge out there with you lot! So please send in what you can. Anything from a full-blown article to a one-liner will be gratefully received.
A perfect example was posted by Poprivet recently and here it is

"Has anyone wondered why the exhaust manifolds on each side of a V12 are in groups of 3 cylinders rather than being single ones of 6? Same goes for the 6 cylinder engine, the exhausts join further down the pipe.
Due to valve overlap, engines with more then 3 cylinders have more then one exhaust valve open at a time. If there was one manifold serving all 6 cylinders, back pressure from one of them would affect the exhaust of the other. Separating them enables longer valve opening to optimise power and efficiency"

Brilliant! Thanks Al!!
So anything you've got to share like that would be great. Please either post it here or email me at xjs.jec@gmail.com

I have one for you, David. I`ve done the editing so you can just send it to Nigel.

"Do you suffer people with the perennial problem of leaking exhaust valves? Worry no more.

The JECs` very own inventor, Mike Kennedy, has come up with the solution after working on the issue for the last six months. This amazing wonder aid ensures visitors are no longer offended by exhaust blow off. Tried, destructively rated and tested in the bath, this little appliance utilizes a Schreader valve and a urological collection bag that can be plugged into a leaking human within thirty seconds.

The device has been pressure tested to twenty five psi and its handy little drain tap enables venting either to atmosphere once visitors have left or can be attached to a water/methanol top fuel system for use on most supercharged Jaguar models.

The tap links to the vacuum side of the supercharger elbow suction pipe and when the vehicle throttle is closed, vacuum from within the elbow empties the bag into the supercharger stub pipe. Independent tests under controlled conditions have shown that a Jaguar V8 inlet manifold can empty the trapped gas in this appliance in under thirteen seconds and increases spike fuel octane levels to 103RON equivalence. Its a must have if you engage in hill climb competitions.Over-fueling capability is also afforded by pressurizing the Schreader valve with a bicycle pump. The designer discourages the use of a compressor.

Built to ISO 9001 specification, the end user must ensure suitability for any envisaged application. Orders are now being taken. Just £20 buys you into the action."

There you go. The appliance you always wished you owned but never had to hand at the required time.

There is a lovely CDROM called Nine Lives which covers lots of Jaguar hints and tips (not colostomy bags though Mike!)

It was put together by the late Brian Schreurs in 2003 as an ofshoot of Kirby Palms on-line xjs book. I am proud to be a part contributer along with many far more knowledgeable folk such as Roger Bywater, Kirby Palm, Mark Barker, Bernard Embded, Wayne Estrada and so many others that were at the early internet days of help and long before the JEC had a website.

The CD isn't available new anymore but one may come up on 'tinternet now and again. It runs under Internet Explorer and I can still run my copy using Windows 10 although it is rather old fashioned now being 15 years old technology.

There are also other tips and snippets that one should be wary of believing.

For example it is untrue that if you replace your spark plugs with glow plugs you can run your car on diesel 8)
