Rear Window Chrome

Postby keith1 » Wed Nov 14, 2007 7:34 pm

I have just had my MK2 resprayed and replaced the rubber seal to the back window. As a consequence. I can't get the chrome strip to fit back on. Maybe the rubber seal is different or not up to original specs as it was an internet buy and seems thicker. Anybody come across this problem before and is there a remedy?

Regards

Keith

Hi!
I have had the same trouble that it was impossible to get the chrome on after the window was mounted. Later I heard that the chrome shall be mounted on the rubber before installing the window. I´m not sure if that is right but it might be worth trying.
Best regards/Johnny

:) Thanks Johny,

I will certainly have a look at that option.

Hi Keith

I had the same problem last year on the front windscreen. I removed the perished seal and window myself and prepared the bodywork channel back to bare metal and painted it before replacing with a new seal.

I choose to call in a local windscreen replacement specialist who on the phone said he had experience of old cars and would be happy to do it for £40.

I've got to say the window and seal took minutes, but he had the devils own job and took over 2 hours trying to get the chrome strip to fit in. Eventually he done the job, which I am 90% happy with. He used a modern bonding adhesive to stick the strip in. It fits almost everywhere within the seal groove, but it kept popping out, hence why he used adhesive. Looks OK, but hope I never have to replace again as it's stuck like the proverbial ****.

Hope that helps.

Regards Steve

Hi
I need a driver's side rear window chrome for my S Type and wondered if there was anyone who had one (or the set) and didn't want silly money for them. Apparently, no one makes them anymore and originals are recommended. i have been quoted £100 per side.

New rubber is a problem , I had my front and back glass fitted by a professional, he said my new rubbers where a good fit , some are terrible, I did by them some 23 years back .
Had my old chrome trim re chromed , as they say the new window trim is a terrible job to fit ,
My rubber was put in first , then the chrome trim !
New rubber parts are a joke , very few are any good , most the shore is wrong , I fitted a new boot seal , boot lid would not shut , the shore was too hard !!
Any one fitting new rubber and new chrome trim , good luck !!!

Hi
I'm going to have to do this job myself. The (softer) rubbers are in but I'm dreading fitting the chromes. They're notoriously hard to do and I'm told the S Types, (which I have) have theirs bonded in. Paul, from Potteries Jaguar Spares, told me they had to re-send some out to the Middle East because they'd cut the chromes in to pieces to get them in! Has anyone got any tips?

Hi There,

We are just experiencing the same problem with my 1968, 420, following a total re-build; Have had experienced glass fitters in, but they have failed with rear trim- front screen, rubber and chrome trim fitted a dream in minutes.

Can anyone advise what type of adhesive was used, so it wil stick like ***** to the rubber,

Thanks,

Stella Steve

I recently bought one of the above and had it re-chromed. It doesn't fit. I've noticed that the centre of each end on the ones I already had, has a small hole pressed in. On the one I bought, this hole is on the edge. Would anyone know if Jaguar changed the position of this hole at any time? If not, then its not a Jaguar part. At the mo, I have the supplier adamant that they sold me the right part, suggesting the chromers have probably mixed it up with another part and given me that.

Because of replacement rubber concerns, I decided to leave my rubbers in place when I had my Daimler resprayed. I had my chromes refitted by an experienced fitter. It was OK. Later, the trim gradually become loose - so I wired the two halves together, very fine stainless wire, and used black sealant to fix it to the rubber. Took the car to Windsor - remained in place for 500 or so miles so far.

Good idea. The guy who fitted my front chromes couldn't bring the 2 halves in close enough, resulting in me having to make an oversized clip from a scrap chrome, to cover the two holes. Had he wired them, this could have been avoided.

Can someone explain what is meant by this "wiring"? I cannot imagine a solution that would keep the chrome in the (old, little hard) rubber of my car. It came 12 years ago without the chrome installed (but was with the car).

Hi
There is a hole in each end of the two chrome halves; presumably for suspending them when they are chromed. When you are refitting the chromes into the rubber windscreen seal, if you can't bring the two halves close enough, threading some thin wire through each pair of holes and twisting it round, should pull the 2 halves closer together. the wire loops could then be cut to allow the clips to be positioned.

That is exactly what I did and still in place!
