1994 XJ40 Sov 4.0 Radio wont switch on anymore

Hi All,

My radio / cassette head unit has recently stopped working. Over the last few months it had an intermittent issue whereby on some occasions it simply would not switch on but with some perseverance (switch on switch off in a repeat cycle) it would eventually switch on and would operate as expected for a few weeks without issue until the issue re-occurred. However, just this week the issue persists and I can no longer enjoy listening to my CDs and the radio.

I have noted that when the unit is non-functional, the red security light (located top right on the unit) is flashing every few seconds or so.

I worry that maybe water ingress is causing an issue. Despite having a new front windscreen and some holes in the bulk head sealed the front passenger foot well can on occasion feel damp (well, the insulation under the carpet can feel damn/wet occasionally).

Does anyone have any pointers on what could be causing the issue? Are there any checks I could perform? I'm not a great fan of pulling the trim apart, but am willing to have a go if its not too onerous...

I have a work-around

It involves my Samsung S7 phone and the simple radio app. Now I can listen to the 1pm news on Radio 4 using my phone when out for lunch in the XJ40. It sits nicely in front of the broken radio /cassette head unit so it does not roll around.

I guess the fix will have to wait until the car goes into the garage for some minor bobywork in a month or so.

These 40 radios are not easy to fix once they go intermittent/ die. There are companys that off to repair them, but i would expect it to cost over £100. Theres a similar thread going on X300 radios, so the same situation there really!
Most people recommend updating to a modern stereo, though that doesn't suit everyones taste on originality of course.
