PROUD NEW OWNER OF A JAGUAR XJ-S - ADVICE NEEDED PLEASE!

Postby vipervisual » Wed Dec 20, 2017 4:46 pm

Hello JEC Memebrs. I've finally done it, I've just purchased my dream car a 1985 Jaguar XJ-S in Signal red. After driving it home a few things I noticed.
There is no hot air coming through into the car. The radiator has been recommission very recently is this linked? Also the horn is not working :( even after just passing the MOT.
No instrument panel lights.

Could this be related to a fuse? I really hope so.
The resting revs are very high too.

Please tell me all you can. I guidance located in the midlands willing to travel to an XJ-S specialist please advise if you know of one. KWE is alittle pricey for me at this moment.

Anyway I'm still extremely excited and in love with this machine.
Thanks

Hello and Welcome! Delighted you've joined the fold!
Lack of hot air could be a number of things. First, are the fans working? If so then if the radiator has recently been out has the system been bled properly and maybe there's an airlock in the heater matrix. There is also a heater valve that is vacuum operated. Has the vacuum hose fallen off? Its also not unknown for the heater valve to stop working. Is the hose leading into it hot?
Horn - check the fuse would be the first and obvious thing. Rather surprised it passed an MOT if its doesn't work!
Instrument panel lights - again as you say check the fuse. It will be one of the ones above your knees (can't remember whether its the passenger or drivers side). Have you also checked the rheostat? Could just be that its adjusted all the way down?
Idle revs can be adjusted via the auxiliary air valve - there is an adjuster nut on the side. Do the revs drop as the car warms up or stay high? If so it could be that the AAV is stuck.
Is the car a 3.6 or V12?
As for specialists, David Marks in Nottingham is our model specialist and knows more about the XJS than I ever will!
Hope that helps

PS if you can manage to post a few pictures that would be great!

Hello Vipervisual,

Welcome to the world of JEC and XJ-S ownership! You'll find many friendly, knowledgeable folk here to help you. I know I did when I washed up a few months ago. Please post a pic or two if you can.

Hi everyone! GOOD NEWS.....
I now have hot air inside the car! Im so relieved as driving huddled up in this weather was becoming tiresome. The solution.....
My water pump was corroded inside. Sourced a new one from Roy at David Manners and hey presto! FIXED.

Still got the cutting out to fix. Mechanic working on that now. Will keep you all informed and more photos to come.

Many thanks!
