Hello Folks,
Can anyone advise how to remove the steering wheel on my X300 1995? Cant see any screws at the rear and wondered if you have to remove the column covers first? Thanx in anticipation..Charlie.

Charlie,

If the X300 is the same airbag-type wheel as the XJ40 and XJS then there should be no issue of battery interference as it's mechanically deployed not electrically deployed. I am not sure what the author of the article means in terms of airbag deployment risk via battery. However no bad thing in disconnecting battery if you're playing around with other electrical circuit disconnections on the wheel.

As regards the special tool, if it's the same as the XJS, you'll really struggle to find one but it's easy to sort. The wheel uses a half-moon end-shape pin. I found that a small thin-wall socket fitted over the end and I just packed the socket with a small sliver of wood to create a half-moon shape. Can't remember the size but about 6mm might be right. If you're worried you could glue a packing piece in the socket to give a sung fit. You might be lucky and the pin will turn with a thin pair of needle-nosed pliers even. The XJS manual says to back it out 12 turns. Try not to disturb the pin when the wheel is off then you can just turn it back the exact same number. Be careful. I felt quite nervous the first time I did it and turned the other way! I now feel ok about doing it!

Cheers

Thanx Paul,
Thats good advice. I'm new to X300 and dont have manual or handbook as yet so could i ask one more question. On the column under the steering wheel there's a lever on the right which raises/lowers the steering column and there's another lver underneath just to the right of centre that operates a cable pull~could you advise the function of this? Thanx in anticipation. Charlie.

On a 300 its even easier than that!!

disconnect the battery

turn the wheel 90 degrees one way from dead centre, then at the back of the wheel at the top you will feel a small hole, there is a captive torx fitting in here, release this, turn the wheel 180 degrees the other way to bring the other side to the top, release the second torx. turn the wheel back to dead centre, GENTLY move the air bag forwards and disconnect the electrical connections. Then with a deep socket and long breaker bar release the steering wheel locking nut, Replacement is the reverse of course, allow 20 mins maximum
