And the story so far I give up no not really, frustrated I am but iam not giving up i just want to drive the bloody thing. A email to Mr David Marks and a telephone conversation and the car is going to there. Wish i had done it in the first place i nearly did but its about 120 miles away,we live and learn.Till the next time !

And the next instalment - Spoke to Mr.David Marks with all the conflicting info very hard to pin point problem by phone ! So off it went the 100 mile or so to him on a recovery truck. Mr Marks had a good look and took the heads off to find the valve clearance had closed up on one cylinder and stared to close up on the others for the time being we dont know why. So I can have the two heads machined with new valves etc which is eye watering expensive or source a second hand engine and the time you do that with new tensioners and water pump etc is also eye watering expensive.After much heart ache I am going to walk away a let the car go to the breakers. I am more then a bit annoyed but its one of those things.
I will add that the best thing I did was send it to Mr Marks his advise,knowledge,helpfulness and his step by step updates where a great help and I will have no doubt whats so ever the next Jag will go to him and his team when the need arises
THANK YOU EVERY ONE FOR YOUR HELP IT IS GREAT TO KNOW THAT THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEONE HERE TO RUN THINGS PAST AND GET GREAT ADVISE,TWO (OR SEVERAL) HEADS ARE BETTER THAN ONE!

Drew - that's a great shame to have to make that hard decision but at least you've had David to have a good look for you and you know exactly what you're dealing with. Better perhaps to make that decision now than carry on sinking time and money into it then only to decide later that you're not prepared to go the whole way.

Very sorry to hear of the diagnosis and your conclusion. I suspect you're doing the right thing, though. It would be very easy to throw good money after bad and end up with a car that has cost way more than it's value. I know it's easy for me to say but sometimes, you just have to take the hit and move on.

did you buy this from a garage, or private sale ,

if garage then you would have grounds to take the car back for a refund I would imagine, especially as you said ' the mechanic said to take it to jaguar for the faulty wire ' !

just my thoughts , as I feel the fault light must have been reset more than once before given some of its history ?

there are good ones out there, I hope it hasn't put you off the X308 , as they are fantastic cars, if a little frustrating at times

Really sorry to hear your tale of woe Drew, firstly that you have had this very bad deal and also that it sounds like yet another 308 is deemed uneconomical to persevere with. My two questions are simply: is the main structure of this car very sound in all the notorious bad places and other than the present (admittedly big) problem, is it otherwise mechanically very good?
As really good 308's are becoming more difficult to find, if the answers to those questions are yes, then if it were my own car, I would have the head work done. If the answer to either is no, then unfortunately you have to let go.

Hi Drew,
Sorry to hear of your misfortune and that another X308 might be going to the breakers.
Hope you don't give up on the X308 but I know from experience it's hard to like a model once it has given you grief.
