I just wondered if someone can tell me the service schedule for an XJ8 4.2?
I believe the service intervals are 10,000 miles or annually?
Does the car tell you what needs to be done and when like on BMW's or is it to a schedule based simply on age/mileage?
What I would like to find out is when the minor and major alternate or at what age/mileage the major services are due?
Are the 4.2's "twin spark" so 16 plugs or are they 8?
Basically any and all helpful pointers before I take the plunge please!
As I haven't bought a X350 of any description yet, but was impressed even with the 3.0 petrol I viewed, is the schedule the same for these also?
Thanks in advance.
Servicing help and information please.
Re: Servicing help and information please.
If you or indeed anyone else need a decent service schedule guide, ping me your email address via the one to found on the X350 magazine header and I will send you the material I have. This has been sourced via a friendly UK Main Dealer.
Essentially you are looking at annual 10k mile service intervals. 10, 20 and 30 thousand miles, then 10, and 20 again. Then a slightly more involved 60K. Then 10, 20, 30 again and so on.
The 60k is perhaps the most inportant service which MUST include a gearbox oil filter and oil change. The diff oil ius at 90k. In my experience, this should really be done every 60k. Supercharger oil changing is every 60k but in my opinion should really be done every 60k.
The car does not have the BMW type service lights.
Hope that helps,
Mike

...and only 8 plugs. Service interval for plugs on 4.2 is 100k but I'd be checking them every 10k and making a decision each time.

Ah yes, the plugs.
At 70k the electrode air gaps were about 1mm over the recommended gap. I changed the whole plug set as they were eleven years old and I didn`t want to risk any chance of mis-fires and consiquental coil damage. I found a set of long life plugs on ebay at a 60% discount so that was good enough for me. The car ran more smoothly than previously so I was happy enough with the result.

Re: Servicing help and information please.
Thanks for the invaluable help.
Is it correct to assume the 10k is an oil and filter change, the 20k the same plus maybe air filter and pollen/cabin filter, and the 30k is all filters, fluids including brake fluid plus obviously visual inspection throughout?
Mike, do you mind me PM'ing my email address to you with regards the full service schedule you mention above?

Re: Servicing help and information please.
Toomanycars,
It's simpler than that. It's an "A" service every 10k, a "B" service every 20k and a few extra items at specific intervals. But really it's a service every 10k with certain items at different intervals, namely:
- Cabin Filter every 30k
- Air Filter every 40k
- Fuel Filter every 60k
- Spark Plugs every 100k
- Accessory Belt every 150k
- Brake fluid every 2 years
However in my view, I'd check all of the "extra" items" every 10k or annually and change as necessary. I'd do fuel filter every 40k or 3 years, brake fluid every 2 years and coolant every 3 years. Just my view.
Cheers
Paul

Re: Servicing help and information please.
Thanks Paul.
I'm much the same personally when it comes to maintenance, but it's my first time looking at Jags and wanted to know the sort of things that should be done and when. After all, a service stamp doesn't tell you much does it?
I am hoping to find supporting invoices, and certainly one of the possibilities I have shortlisted, the owner has that. It is however due a service now and if I do buy it, I'm fairly sure I will be having the works done as it is then future proofed for my enjoyment.

Re: Servicing help and information please.
Paul,
I have sent you the service sheets that PTJS1 (Paul) sent me.
Much of the so called service work is of an "inspection" type with the idea that replacement of various components is carried out if that inspection reveals that a part is in need of urgent replacement. An example of that would perhaps be "Inspect hoses and drive belts".
I`ve also sent you a copy of my own electronic record of the work I`ve carried out to my XJR over the last 12k miles after it had seen 78K miles use in previous owners hands. You will see in that log that typical service items have been actioned but there is also a great deal of extra out of service schedule work carried out as I have uprated or modified various parts of the car.
My next job at 90k is to replace what would appear to be a sluggish Bank2 (N/S) post cat Lamda sensor which has consistantly been "flat lining" with minimal voltage and is causing the engine check light to illuminate at least once in every trip. The fault code PO430 gives the game away. One Lamda sensor delivered which is the pre cat unit (grey plug) and incorrect, so I`ve ordered another sensor (black plug) which I hope will be the correct unit! This work obviously falls outside normal typical servicing.

Re: Servicing help and information please.
Thanks Mike, I have noticed I've 2 emails from you but haven't had time to look at them yet.
It turns out I now cannot view my favoured option for another two weeks anyway, but will view them before anymore viewings.
